Kidnapping in Joco
I read something about it yesterday but couldn't find the post today...thought it was probably on the "other" board and they zapped it. Does anyone know if this is true or just a juicy rumor?

Re: Kidnapping in Joco
That was, I think, last week. If I recollect.... man in Joco kidnapped... taken to Chapala near the bullring and held there.
Police came and a gunfight ensued...
In the fuss the victim escaped to a neighbor's house and hid for a while.
There were lots of assorted bullets collected as evidence. No one was injured?!!

That's the incident I was referring too. Doesn't sound good at all. Very brazen....and I agree...where are the Federales?

Re: Kidnapping in Joco
This is unofficial:
It is known which group that is trying to take over the area. They murdered 2 people from one of the tire shops in Chapala sometime in the past few days. People have evacuated the area in Joco, including my friends that I'm trying but unable to communicate with.
I just spoke with a Mexican friend driving in the area of Jocotepec to visit a resident there. She was unaware that there were any problems in Joco and said everything looked normal but would be speaking soon to the resident & would let me know.
What a contrast. Sounds like there's "stuff" happening but life is still going on as usual with some that have gotten frightened away. The news is so slow. We may or may not find out in a few days from the newspapers what has happened.
We all know that stuff happens everywhere and I never kept up with criminals in the US, so why bother here? Freaks me out when I first hear about it & then, after I process the info, life is back to normal. Kind of like being a little freaked by a scorpion until it's been squished and put in the trash.

Re: Kidnapping in Joco
Which are you referring to? The gun fight last week by the Chapala bullring or what's happening now?
Last week there were two kidnappings. You would have thought someone would have been killed in the gunfire. It sounded like a war! We could see & hear it. It didn't last for very long.
One kidnapped didn't make it while the other was left abandoned in the house & walked out!
You can squish the thought or the temptation to be fearful about it. Yes, there is a concern of crossfire but we aren't involved in this activity. It's amazing that this stuff is going on because 99% of time you don't see anything.

I guess most violence is like that. A land mine goes off...and people walking by an hour later wonder why they don't keep the area neater. Unless you actually see it happening...you may miss it. Of course that doesn't make you any safer.

That's why I don't worry about it. Live life and love life -- but realize that one day it's over.
Of course, I'd rather be taken in my sleep than by a landmine or a gun battle.

Re: Kidnapping in Joco
This is a new incident of kidnapping, but the same family in Jocotopec - now the second son has been kidnapped. There are details on a Jocotopec chat group and you can read it here - open to the public: http://groups.google.com/group/jocotepeckers/browse_thread/thread/a9b0b774d5cf96c5
And since I just found out about this, I went shopping in Jocotopec last night!

Re: Kidnapping in Joco
TOB, closed the topic. It did get a bit crazy with people sharing all kinds of 'unreported' crimes. The goofy thing about that is that there is 'unreported' crime all over the world, no? I'm sure we don't have every crime written about in the US papers. Come on! It almost makes me laugh. Unless you lived in a podunct town, would you read that your teacher's dog was picked up by the dog catcher. Or someone broke a window at such and such street. It seems that maybe some of the expats come from that podunct town being they want to know all of that. I have other things to occupy my time.
I understand people wanting the facts with what's happening in Joco. Since we don't have a news channel giving all possible angles, it's just natural to do so, no? Speculate? That is, if you enjoy analyzing a situation. People just need to understand that it's unofficial news. It may remain unofficial. What makes news official anyway? Especially here? Unless it's confirmed by a local or word of mouth? Do we have to have the inspector come out to say yes, it's official, there was a kidnapping? This morning I spoke with people that said they heard there was one kidnapping, others said 2. Conflicting yes. The news may reach here before it ever hits the papers. Speculation isn't a bad thing, is it? We know something is going on. Hope for the best, right?

The problem at Lakeside is that there is more misinformation than fact unless it comes from a Mexican newspaper or the Guad Reporter.

In this situation, I think people are being told the truth. It's not being reported. However, call me paranoid, I wouldn't suggest writing about it here.

I think we can get the gist of what's happening from Georgia Nucci in her post on the (Joco) Google board, from simpsca.

Georgia's not a dimwit gossip. She's a retired attorney who speaks Spanish and has been in Mexico a long time.

That's correct, and Georgia can explain local "Rumours" better than any one.

Now you're being silly. I wasn't referring to you. I'm talking about the people who are saying this is just rumors from their maid's cousin's, butcher's exwife's gardener.
