Re: Too young to retire!
Nosnow, your post: "Lotusflower...your words tell us more about who you are, than who we are " reminded me of a quote.
“We see the world, not as it is, but as we are -- or, as we are conditioned to see it. When we open our mouths to describe what we see, we in effect describe ourselves, our perceptions, our paradigms.” ― Stephen R. Covey

Re: Too young to retire!
A/C Gypsies,
Lot's of good advise and recommendations, here's mi dos centavos.
I think there are niche market opportunities catering to seniors that you can turn into gainful legal employment. In no particular order:
1. Create a 'are you o.k?' phone call center. There are way too many seniors living independently who need someone to check in on them daily. So everyday you call your clients at an appointed time, say 9:00 a.m., just to check in. If they don't respond after several calls by noon you go check on them. If they are fine but forgot or went shopping or whatever you charge them for the visit. If there is a problem, you handle it. This particular population will have other needs, see what they are and how you can incorporate them into your menu of services.
2. Be on call to do whatever whenever, airport pickups, shopping, etc..
3. Rides to Guadalajara or anywhere else for doctors appointments, sightseeing, etc..
4. Security inspection and recommendations. Become knowledgeable about video equipment, alarms, installation etc..
5. House/pet sitting with the goal of never paying rent/utilities again.
6. Party planning and or catering.
If you're not, become proficient in Spanish. Create a legal business, the taxes and licenses and fees are next to nothing.
Of course reputation is paramount in this small community so if you do it right your business will grow.

Like i already said, just average. I suppose it's not normal to have your picture taken while driving down the highway too? I'm sure it happens all of the time and you were just unaware, they're sneaky fast. My friends said it was because I'm a gringa and they aren't used to a gringa driving a big white van, so to stay on topic, if the op opens a business they may not want their wife driving one. This was in 2005. idk.

Re: Too young to retire!
My friend is visiting here with me and she's in total agreement about the picture taking. The older ones are probably more concerned with avoiding being mugged while out and about and don't even notice when their pictures are being taken or being taken of others. It's very common here. And you don't have to be anything special. I mean look at some of the avatars on this forum.

Re: Too young to retire!
MyHomeSweetHome, maybe you can start another thread about this picture taking business. I am a photographer and always looking for my own photo ops so I notice other people taking pictures. It is not possible for you to tell the subject of the picture someone is taking. Just because a camera is pointed in your direction does not make you the subject. Perhaps people are taking pictures of something around you or behind you and not of you at all. Even in 2005, gringos were not so unusual Lakeside as to create a photo op just by being here.

Re: Too young to retire!
I agree with you. But when you're driving to D.F.(Mexico City) on the freeway, and there's nothing else around but you driving and a car pulls up along side you from the left with the passenger clearly pointing a camera at you with a group of smiling young people, and your friends tell you that they are taking your picture, it's a little hard to mistake the photo op. Given the the opportunity back in 2006, I'm sure now, that the two gentlemen where taking pictures of the side of MailBoxes Etc following me closely saying groserias while I was trying to get to church, silly me.

To MyHomeSweetHome...
Thanks for all of the good ideas! I would send you an e-mail, or a PM, but those options are apparently not available to you.

BTW A/C, I love your catch phrase...... " Learned the hard way (more than once) that "gringos" are more dangerous than Mexicans."

Re: Too young to retire!
Sorry, Myhomesweethome. I got the impression from something you said earlier that everywhere you went your picture was being taken. I agree that in the instances you describe you (or your truck at least on the highway) were the subject. I just have never met anyone (or read anyone on a web forum) who has had the experiences you seem to be relating. So I am curious about it and trying to understand.

I'm sure it's too much personal information for a web forum.

There is no end to opportunities if you only open your eyes.
One of my favorites... is the Mime in front of WalMart...
He pretends to Wash Your Car.... then sticks his hand in the window to get paid...
Priceless!!

Hocks, I give him change if I have it because he makes me laugh.
There is also the juggler with the dreadlocks. He is not there as often as the mime but I saw him the other day.

Re: Too young to retire!
Just came back from a visit to my friends and family NOB.
Had a great time, and really enjoyed coming HOME to Ajijic.
My advice to the OP is simple, and unchanged from my original response.
Go back from whence you came. This place may not be your home.

A/C, what did you do before you moved here? We don't have any understanding of your skills or experiences so it is very hard to make any meaningful suggestions.

since they sent me their skill set via pm, which i will not divulge, this should give you a hint of how successful they will be here unless there plan is to compete with mhsh and husband or join forces

Re: Too young to retire!
You know, if this is what they want to do and they are honest and trustworthy there's nothing wrong with it. They need to make some business cards, make sure they have their visas in order and get to a meet n greet, start a facebook page, get to some meet n greets, a karaoke night, build a clientele.
When my kids grew up and became adults, I told them to hit the pavement and go find a job. It works. There's work here. Being a foreigner the fear of the unknown is scary but once you realize it's not any different than living anywhere else in the world, just a language difference, put your mind and effort into it and do it!
This is your life...are you who you wanna be??
