I was raised in the country and learned to hunt squirrels. They are delicious cooked with onions, mushrooms and gravy.

squirrel dumplings are good too. There is a certain time of year in the winter to kill them, they carry parasites. Don't eat them much any more it has been too warm until this winter.. The ones here on my property are somewhat tame.

Yes, there is a season. Can't hunt them in hot weather.

In the country they have different notions. In south B.C. the gray squirrels are an introduced species, which are driving out the native black squirrels, they, as well as cottontail rabbits, opossums and starlings are considered varmints by the regulatories = open season. The squirrels and possums can put up one heck of fight to a trained hunting dog or hunting hawk so they are usually shot. I leave the carcasses for the coyotes. The most humane, and uncomplicated, is a .22 calibre air rifle. Some jackass introduced bullfrogs to the area, and they are eating the beautiful little tree frogs, silencing their beautiful singing in place of their gross "karumpf".

You get to feel like a genuine redneck, sitting around the pond in the moonlight with some aged sipping whiskey, and a night scope, plunking bullfrogs. Very Happy
