It seems that all the chatter about barking dogs reflects on people with an obsessive need to control life who, unfortunately for all, choose to live in Mexico instead of Hemet, California and complain endlessly about the way things are. Now that the dogs will be gone, what's next? Exterminating rain birds?
Oh I don't think it reflects on obsessive people that moved to Mexico.
I think much of the chatter on this thread actually reflects on people who feel they need to judge others that hold different views.
My Mexican family has no obsessive need to control life but they do enjoy a good night's sleep. They didn't choose to live here instead of Hemet. They are all from here. They don't complain endlessly about the way things are except when it affects their lives directly. Like being kept awake all night when they have to rise early for work or school. BTW we have 5 dogs who don't bark incessantly either. We don't allow that. Our fellow Mexican neighbors appreciate that.

Actually not intended to be as I was simply stating my opinion. People are certainly free to beat me up over that statement and I won't get mad or argue with them if they do.

Merry, I enjoy your wit but where in the hell did you come up with this “Bullshit”. The transition in structure is to draw attention for many reasons.

I thought it was a stretch too, but when you make as many comments as Merry does, your bound to have a dud or two.

Re: Animal Shelter
A few puzzling things come out of this "discussion":
1. I'd like to hear one logical reason why an animal shelter needs to be "centrally located" in order to succeed in its program? Do people seriously think that driving as far as Racquet Club or a similar distance affects their decision to adopt a dog?
2 Where does the attitude come from that if someone doesn't see things their way.....they should move from Mexico and live in a place like Hemet, CA?
IMO, if someone is willing to adopt a dog, take responsibility for it for the rest of its life "in sickness and in health", make sure it's cared for when they travel and offer it the status of being part of their family.........they should surely be willing to drive a few miles into the country where the shelter wouldn't be bothering anyone. It shouldn't be a snap decision based on seeing a cute puppy behind an art gallery in town. This is serious stuff, as anyone who's ever had to run up a large vet bill for their sick animal knows.

Re: Animal Shelter
A shelter needs to be located near where the people are, because we don't live in a perfect world. In your perfect world, people would drive a couple of miles up a winding dirt road to see the 70+ dogs at the Ranch, but too often they don't. We have, at any given moment, dozens of perfectly wonderful dogs, but finding them forever homes is incredibly hard work.
Sometimes it is because they don't have access to a car, which doesn't mean they can't care for a dog. Sometimes it is simply our "make everything easy" mentality that sends folks to WalMart rather than trotting around Chapala or the village to go to half a dozen shops to buy essentials.
Someone on TOB suggested an adoption day where Anita's and the Ranch bring dogs to Riberas be viewed. It would be worth a try. I know I am tired of looking into doggy eyes at the Ranch every week and saying "I don't know why no one wants you".

Anita is a long time friend of ours....We were visiting her at the end of the tourist season when gringo snowbirds have shown up to drop off a dog...seems they just wanted a noise-maker for security while visiting. They didn't even offer her a donation. Somehow my stress control worked! (stress control = when your mind overcomes your natural instinct to kick the living s___ out of some dumb SOB that definitely deserves it.)CheenaGringo wrote:

I would not be a likely candidate for expecting a perfect world, but you're not selling shoes or groceries, so taking a longer ride shouldn't be that much of a burden to people who are serious about adopting a family member.
Maybe a little help in the publicity department would see more of the dogs at the ranch being adopted. Those people running the shelters up there deserve medals.

Re: Animal Shelter
Didn’t one of the shelters also sell dog & cat food and other animal needs to help with the cost of food for the animals? This probably would acquire a convenient location.

Move the shelter to a location closer to all the people so even more of you can complain about the barking?

Re: Animal Shelter
I realize most of you all are older and as someone one said earlier driving is an issue for some. What about the outskirts between joco and San Louis soyetlan.... If you all can drive to mazimitla or talpalpa.. a shelter further out would be an answer. Then some one can open a stor centrally located in town.

You’re forgetting about labor, free or cost, one can sell items while tending to the animals. Have you ever worked for a “non-profit” organization? Now I do agree that shelters should be where they don‘t disturb others but to think this is a simple solution, it’s not. We need some better solutions, instead of bitching, let’s think about this.

I am suggesting a boutique speciality store just for the ones who really like to spoil the animals. Custom beaded collars and leashes..homemade dog food..custom-made beds.. you get the drift.

In your sig you say:
"If you really want to get creative, take the seized drugs back to the country of origin and resell them to undercut the growers price. Puts the growers out of business."
Are you serious? Keep the drugs in circulation?

Re: Animal Shelter
Parker, I am saying shelter further out.. specialty store local. Perhaps a % of the profits go towards the shelter. You could have a doggie spa. Trainers at the new boutique. Massages for pampered pooch. I am sure enterprising locals could make all the goodies. Not to mention you are helping the ones who need it the most!!!! Oh homemade dog treats.. doggie clothes...

Re: Animal Shelter
I believe now is a good time to let all of you who wish to help know the ranch has a great need for volunteers at this time. Due to illnesses, moving away and the end of snowbird season there are very few hands to help with the work. They need help today. The dogs need to be fed and watered each and every day. The dogs need to be petted and talked to, they love to go for a walk. The ranch dogs have all been spayed/neutered and have been vetted and vaccinated. All are healthy, the ranch has never adopted out a sick dog.
Gudrun has always been available to take people who wish to adopt a dog and do not have transportation up to the ranch. A ride to and from the ranch for a potential adopter will be arranged. One can call 766-3813 or 766-2214 and make an appointment.
Now is the time to step up to the plate, turn off the computer and volunteer. The dogs will love you for it.

O.K. I get your drift, and now I’m going to play “devils advocate”. Now unless you can figure a way to get the “Tapatios” from Guadalajara to shop in this specialty store because the local market neither has the numbers (people) or very few with this type of expendable cash and figure out how to get a private enterprise to share their profits with a non-profit organization, you may need to reevaluate this proposition. Hell, try again there has to be something.

OK..assuming the shelter to be closed is not a lease. Sell it. Take that money for shelter and boutique. Find another building centrally located. Locals and bored retirees with time desire and knowledge make the specialty items.
Whoever has the wares pays a nominal fee for space to sell at boutique. Of course the fee would depend on covering the basic utilities and operating costs.
Collect 20p fee to enter, that goes to dog shelter/boutique who ever needs it most. Start a doggie Cruz Rojo. Have semi annual animal talent shows. Where there is a will there is a way...
