espíritu del lago wrote:You know out in the country in tx. We have a lot of ferals my wife and I and a few animal lovers do exactly that . The country vets know us and give good deals on shots and fixes. Unless the cats pose a problem with chickens we leave them to hunt vermin, they pretty much are self sufficient.I have one spayed female that sleeps in the trees and recognizes hawks. The birds of prey in my area are plentiful. Right now I am keepimng 4 babies and not fixing my other f emale til she has a litter. My neighbors need cats too. Our pound last year didn't have enough cats. No free ones in the papers either. I guess the difference in the wild is a better balance vs. Cities and towns.where there are not as many predators. My cats are nowhere near starving or sick and yea for the most part are wild.
“Main article: Cat health
The average life expectancy for male indoor cats at birth is around 12 to 14 years, with females usually living a year or two longer. However, there have been reports of cats reaching into their 30s, with the oldest known cat, Creme Puff, dying at a verified age of 38. Feline life expectancy has increased significantly in recent decades. Having a cat neutered or spayed confers some health benefits, since castrated males cannot develop testicular cancer, spayed females cannot develop uterine or ovarian cancer, and both have a reduced risk of mammary cancer. The lifespan of feral cats is hard to determine accurately, although one study reported a median age of 4.7 years, with a range between 0 to 8.3 years”
It appears that our feral cats don’t live nearly as long.

Not with the hawks and rattlesnakes snakes where we live.I need them for mousers where our live stock feed is kept. I consider them working cats not house cats. We trappem get shots and spayed as needed. Our neighbors most do the same. We have a few old Tom's around they are pretty wise .

Cats also keep away snakes and rats and scorpions.

Our cats love killing cock roaches. At night they go hunting the cockroaches that come out and in the morning there are a whole bunch of them lined up by their food dishes. LOL

Uh, dude, you might not want to tell people about the roaches, being in food processing and all.

Back to the noise factor: Pete, I so agree with your comments. Some of us love Mexico precisely because it can be raw, colorful, aggravatingly loud, and largely unregulated (while also refined, serene, and curiously regulated,) and if the noise level exceeds the tolerance level, there are always noise cancellation earbuds and Placido singing Siboney.
It is truly a shame that some folks seem forced to live here even though they would be so much happier living in the highly controlled environment of gated retirement community in Hemet, California. To each their own.

Back to the animal shelter issue: apparently there are 10 dogs desperately needing adoption. Who is short of dogs right now?

Uh, I'm not your Dude. The cock roaches are outside our casa and nowhere near the sausage factory. FYI
We have a very clean sterile environment in our sausage factory all the time. We are going for our federal certification and could be inspected at anytime.

So is this why you moved here so you could listen to the howling noise of dogs, some adventure.
As far as the Animal Shelter dogs, they are in human contact during a few hours of the day and loved very much by those who volunteer to walk them and play with them. They are alone in the evening and on weekends. They need constant contact with humans 24/7. Street dogs don’t seem to have a problem with the barking, because if they bark someone kicks the shit out of them so they become “street smart”. If you notice those dogs, who bark constantly are those who have very limited contact with humans and just need attention.

If everyone here wants to do something proactive... I vote we take up a collection of say about 20 bucks or so each.... then we can rent the place across the street from Flamingo's ... probably enough room there, they could keep mules, donkeys and horses too...

Re: Animal Shelter
The long term reality, minus all the whining and jokes, is that without a centrally located animal shelter with a high turnover, the other shelters simply cannot provide space for all the homeless and neglected dogs in the area. Additional money is not going to make Anita's more accessible - it is still a long drive to the Racquet Club. The Ranch is still going to be hard to find up a dirt road. Dra Pepe's is still going to have a few adoptable dogs kept all day in tiny cages.
And yes, there were possible solutions, but the neighbors weren't interested in solutions - instead they banged on the existing fences and threw rocks at the dogs to make them bark more.
The only thing that is going to change is that the majority of the 150 dogs adopted from the Animal Shelter last year WILL NOT be adopted next year. Instead, they will be back on the street going through garbage and dying of hunger or from eating the wrong thing. I certainly hope the 3 or 4 complainers do as much for the community as the Shelter does. Somehow I doubt it.

Re: Animal Shelter
Like I said, to each their own.
It seems that all the chatter about barking dogs reflects on people with an obsessive need to control life who, unfortunately for all, choose to live in Mexico instead of Hemet, California and complain endlessly about the way things are. Now that the dogs will be gone, what's next? Exterminating rain birds?

Re: Animal Shelter
While I am an admitted animal/pet lover, I have to wonder about a couple of things:
1) The absolute fixation people seem to have about all of these homeless animals. Are we dealing with replacements for the children left behind NOB?
2) Since these stories of animals needing homes is so similar to what I notice with the shelters here NOB, I have to wonder just how much of the problem is exacerbated by the transient "snowbirds" or the "do-gooders" who feel that they should be part of the solution, when they have no business having a pet in the first place?
All too often, I have seen comments blaming the Mexicans for their different attitude towards pets but I am not so sure they are the majority of the perceived problem.

Re: Animal Shelter
Like I tried to point out in my previous reply to you this is'nt an issue of cultural differences it's a quality of life issue, one dog that barks all night and it's ignorant owner do not have the right to deny their neighbors a good nights sleep,as far as the "rain birds" go, I guess you're talking about "salta montes" or "grillos"when one those finds it's way into our bedroom and starts chirping my wife Lupe hunts it down and exterminates with extreme predudice.manymoonsago wrote:Like I said, to each their own.
