Autopistas Run in Two Directions
Back when Dawg was a young man in the 1950s, Gulf Shores, Alabama was noted for its pleasant if modest beach cottages that made the place attractive as a summer hangout for us Montgomery folks. The same was true of Northwest Florida from Panama City to the Alabama line known locally as "L.A." or "Lower Alabama" . During the 1970s and thereafter, retirees from such dreadful places as Wisconsin and Alberta started moving there en masse and the character of the place changed dramatically and formerly pristine beaches with modest cottages in a hiurricane zone became condomnium highrises and the beach was desecrated by concrete monsters that sealed off views of the Gulf. Imagine how beautiful the lagoon at Cancun was befgore it was destroyed by the concrete monsters identifying it as a world class resort. What a crime against magnificent nature.
Back in the 1970s when northerners began to pour into the Alabama Coast, many would complain of the heat and humidity around Mobile. Our favoite rejoinder was always, "I-65 runs both north and south. If you don´t lke here, hit the road and you can get all the way to Chicago before you know it." I repeat that advice to expats who din´t like it in Mexico. Adios!

Neither are we, MC. If we could survive in Downtown Oakland and nearby dangerous Richmond, California for several years (albeit with occasional moments of abject terror characterized by the need to make oneself right with De Lawd without resort to extended contemplation), then we can survive here as well. Of course, who could anticipate being shot cold dead in one´s own garage in the middle of a beautiful day in one of Ajijic´s nicest neighborhoods while returning home with an armful of grocereries. The banality of evil.

True, but this poor soul really did violate one of the first rules of surviving this situation, namely just give them what they want. A neighbor confirmed that he attempted to assault and subdue the robber and the guy shot him.
Happened only two blocks away from our house.

Agree, MC.
The proper response is: hands held high and "No problemo, amigo".
In the olden protest days, the proper response to police with billy clubs heading your way was to go limp (unless you didn't like the current shape of your head).
