Re: New Tango restaurant
Its supposed to open on Dec. 6 (tomorrow) however it doesn't seem likely. The outside of the building still looks like this picture. I haven't seen the inside although I can see furniture stacked up through the windows.

Re: New Tango restaurant
Driving past yesterday, I noticed that they have a set if steps at their entry but no ramp. Didn't see a railing. Tough for anyone in a wheelchair or with trouble getting up steps. The place is huge, and I don't see any way they can open very soon. In addition, that section of the parking lot is always mobbed on weekends already.
(We go the the far west end to park and take our walks.)

Re: New Tango restaurant
Well I believe it did open at lunchtime yesterday. I guess they will finish everything, construction wise, while they work the bugs out with the new layout.

Bug number one: three steep steps to get in the door and no hand holds or railing until one gets inside.

The weirdest feature visible from the Malecon side is a balcony with no door to access it. Just has a window. ???

I think it's a work in progress. Many workers still on job site, but they opened anyway. Last week during the height of the lunch hour workers were banging very LOUDLY at the entry way. I mean REALLY loud!
IMO they should revert to a once-a-week closure to play catch-up on unfinished work. I won't go until all the construction work is done. Can't imagine sitting thru LOUD construction during a meal.

Re: New Tango restaurant
Update: There are now handrails on both sides of the entry steps. There is also a cement ramp, also with handrails at same area.

None of the wait staff can explain the big hole in the roof at the top of the stairs. I have asked several of them what the plan is when it rains and they just shrug their shoulders and laugh. Go figure.........

Yeah, we wondered the same thing about that open area...odd design feature. I also wish the windows along the malecón side could open for better ventilation.

Re: New Tango restaurant
Be careful what you wish for. Open windows on the malecon side will bring in a lot of dust and/or car fumes from the traffic below. Perhaps the hole in the ceiling will be a vented skylight to move the hot air up and out? Especially if the entrance doors are left open and there are ceiling fans?

Re: New Tango restaurant
The malecón windows are well above ground level.
The hole in ceiling covers a lot of real estate; have to walk under it to get to most of the seating area. It looks like the palapa roof wasn't well designed compared to the palapa at former location. That one allowed air to come through on the sides, but prevented rain coming in (unless raining sideways or blowing in).

Re: New Tango restaurant
Yeah, I know the windows are well above ground level... and the dust, noise, pollution also travels up. When a truck goes by my house, the dust cloud is well above my 12 foot wall. The roads are cobblestone but drain to the lake. Any water flow down Colon is going to pool with dirt when the water evaporates.
I bet that they are doing another palapa. They know who to contact and that it works. Perhaps they will even improve on the last one so that sideways rain has no chance to enter. Palapas that are overlap vented at the peak are amazing for removing hot air.

It was excellent when I was there a couple months ago and all at our table enjoyed it. Can’t remember what I ordered but look forward to going back.

Same menu, same quality.
I had the arugula salad with prosciutto, thin slices of parm, pecans. Partner had grilled pulpo. One glass pinot grigio and 1 agua mineral; total 375p.
Their grilled pulpo is the most tender in town....and it tastes like steak!

Re: New Tango restaurant
Ouch! Guess it will remain a special occasion restaurant for me. To be quite honest, we, as a group of four, have only eaten there once in the last 10 years. Too noisy, too expensive, too rushed by the wait staff, and okay food but nothing to write home about. At least they have improved their parking situation.
The original Number Four was the best of all worlds. The purchaser of Number Four, alas, ran it into the ground and it is no more. I also used to like Remy du Lac when it was located in a B&B. I have eaten in its new location and the quality and service had tanked.
Ni modo, there are other more consistent and reasonably priced places to dine.
Still waiting for information on what is going into the old 711 at the top of San Mateo in Riberas. I know it's a restaurant but that's as far as my understanding goes.

Re: New Tango restaurant
Prior to pandemic we went to Tango once a week. Never felt rushed and their food is always high quality, especially their seafood (salmon, pulpo) and largest variety of interesting salads locally. Once in awhile at the old place noise could be a factor on weekends, which is why we go mid-week for dinner or lunch.
I think the price was reasonable, could have saved a bit if I ordered their standard house wine. Salad was huge (but I managed to eat the whole thing). Prices have gone up everywhere over the pandemic. FYI, Tango sill has a special lunch menu priced at 90p. Sandwiches with fries and salad, a few pastas and individual pizzas. Can't remember it all, but for me the best is the Argentine sausage in a bolillo.
We are back to dining out after a 2 month hiatus due to a medical procedure and will try to report back on other venues.
Never been to Remy's as their menu prices are rather steep and a bit outside our walking radius. I do miss the old Number 4 as well. Though again, not a cheap meal and often noisy with large table groups.

Re: New Tango restaurant
Thanks for the info on lunch at Tango's. I prefer going out for lunch rather than dinners nowadays.
Truthfully, I'd rather get take out and dine at home in peaceful quiet. I feel so guilty only occupying one seat in a restaurant when their seating has been limited by the pandemic.

Ferret, I respect privacy, peace and quiet. I encourage you to go out with some lady friends for lunch. Seize the day!
My wife and I loved the Tango when we were last (6 years in Sept). The decorum was wonderful and we both loved their pork chop dinner. Ice cream to die for.
I hope the new building looks better now than the first picture posted. We want to go back there in September.

What is at the old Tango location? And no working windows, what a shame not to have the option.
