denque in Jocotepec
For the past two days the municipality has sound trucks announcing spraying....this is followed by a giant sprayer. Today crews came and removed old tires and trash. Then a crew came and, with our permission, sprayed our entire property...inside and out.
There are over 60 cases in this area.

Re: denque in Jocotepec
Before coronavirus came along, dengue was the major concern of Mexican health authorities. Their research showed that, due to global warming, the type of mosquito that spreads the disease would migrate farther north. About five years ago, a city health worker came by my house to see if there was any standing water on the property. I assured her that I understood that standing water created breeding grounds for mosquitoes. She placed a sticker on my front door and continued down the street.
With the rainy season upon us, be aware of simple precautions to keep the mosquito population under control. Inactive water fountains should be kept dry. If your house has a lavadero, keep it dry as well. Old tires accumulate enough water for mosquitoes to breed...they should be discarded. Water bowls for pets should be drained and replenished often. Any more ideas? Please feel free to add.

I remove the saucers from under my outdoor plants during the rainy season... or put enough fine gravel in them that the watering overflow is a an almost non existent water surface.
The birdies also don't need a bath in the rainy season.

Dengue is not fun. Had it in Panama a few years ago and chikungunya (dengue-lite) twice here (same mosquito species). Constantly spraying yourself is the only way for those that attract mosquitos. Also not fun but better than bone-break fever.

Just curious as to what your blood type is?
The bad news is that if you're type O (and drink beer), the mosquitoes love you. On the other hand, if you're type O you're less likely to suffer severely from Covid-19.
I'm type A and the mozzies don't seem to like me much. Must be a lot of type O's in the neighbourhood.

Mosquitoes also don't like me, but I don't know my blood type (bad, I know, I need to find out).
People should really find out what the chemical is they are spraying and look it up before inviting them to spray your property or thinking it's a good thing. It is usually a pyrethrin-based spray, which is FATAL to fish and crustaceans and some birds. My friend's goldfish all died right after they came by and sprayed and so did another friend's budgie. Of course the guys who spray will assure you it's completely safe-it isn't. Do your research.

There is a bug repellant called Repel. It seems to be finally available through Amazon Mexico. It is based on lemon eucalyptus oil. The only approved natural repellent by the C.D.C. It is inexpensive, and it works.
Newbies, you will be thanking me end of rainy season.

edit. I am sorry the Mexican price is so much higher than U.S.A. This plant does not grow here, mostly Australia and India. It should thrive here, but when?

There are a few huge eucalyptus trees down on the waterfront just east of Maria Isabela. It is where Conchita used to sell her rugs.

Mexicans use citronela for a natural mosquito repellent. I'm not sure, but I think it's what we call lemon grass. You can find the liquid version in herbal shops. Citronela candles are available in most food stores and abarrotes. I use the candles. They seem to work real well.
Yes, eucalyptus does thrive here. They're all over the place. However, good luck in finding limones amarillos (yellow lemons).

Re: denque in Jocotepec
We often buy yellow lemons at Walmart and sometimes at Super Lake in Ajijic. Even found them once at Torito in Ajijic. We always take a bunch of these to Chiapas when we go down there several times a year as they are not available there as far as we have discovered.
Re: denque in Jocotepec
There are many kinds of Eucalyptus trees and Lemon Eucalyptus is one of them. I don't find the Eucalyptus grown around here to be very aromatic... not like the ornamental Eucalyptus branches that you can buy to decorate and scent your home. LOVE that smell.
The lemon Eucalyptus can grow up to sixty feet tall... or you can grow it in a pot and control its size. I want one!

Mosquitoes and no-see-ums are also repelled by tea tree oil. There's no need to spray it all over yourself. If you're sitting out at night, and your ankles are getting bitten, just a few dabs of tea tree oil keeps the little buggers away. It also relieves the itch of a bite.

Citronella and Lemon Grass are different, we grow both plants. I am not sure how effective the Citronella plants are..... as we still see and feel the mosquito's, me more than the wife.
We soak/boil you Lemon Grass and it makes a nice drink

Don't mean to quibble, ( love that word) Cedros. Lemon oil needs to be the "repel' specially brewed, not the natural one. This is a good article from Consumer Reports.

Not sure why people don't just look up this information instead of posting their opinion. Citronella is indeed a type of lemon grass.
