I've never heard this
Rumors abound that Ajijic and the Guadalajara Airport were the nexus of a recent well-known ‘undercover’ CIA operation. That affair allegedly involved drugs in exchange for arms for the Nicaragum rebels. This became known as the Iran-Contra connection of President Ronald Reagan and Oliver North.

Good information but I wish authors would employ proof readers.

Around 1970 there was an older couple who managed an apartment complex where I lived in Alhambra, California. They had lived many years in the Guadalajara area and they said Hugh Hefner was approaching expats for money to start his Playboy magazine.

Santa Cruz de la Soledad
Scientific studies have confirmed that Chapala lakeside’s indigenous settlements belonged to a family of Cocas, an ethnic group specific to this area. For Jose Ramírez Flores, an eminent scholar of the indigenous languages of the region, the term "Cocas" is of Mexican descent, meaning inhabitants or dwellers where pots are abundant. The word stems from Comitl = pot, plus Can = abundance of something, where together they form “Cocan” = where the pots abound, and that in the plural form it becomes “Cocas”.

For the details, see "Compromised: Clinton, Bush and the CIA" by Terry Reed and John Cummings. (Clandestine Publishing, 1995).
The "History of Lakeside" piece by Lawrence Freeman was first published many years ago (Ojo del Lago Feb 2001). Sadly, it contains numerous errors of fact and/or interpretation.

Thank you Tony! I vaguely remember the Iran Contra affair. I was busy and didn't have time for politics.

That doesn't surprise me at all. At about that time up to 40 of the most successful pulp "porn" writers lived in Ajijic and Guadalajara. They weren't really exiled, but just in case.
