And I also prepaid for iLox so will be installed when they get to Riberas. That there is excellent speed for internet is not in doubt according to those that have already been installed on TOB.
I am waiting to see if I can make calls with iLox when the electricity is out. If not then I will make the move to only have the phone service with Telmex. Not before.

I signed up about two weeks ago on the 519 package.  That is TV and internet only.  Haven't had a landline phone for years, just a cellphone.  Not interested in the telephone part of their package.
The woman in the ILOX office told me it will probably be about two months before I'm hooked up in La Villita. The wires are coiled up on the pole outside, so it's just a matter of feeding the line into the house.

So if ilox takes away 30% of internet business from TelMex does that mean the TelMex internet gets a bit better?

You can only hope but I wouldn't hold my breath and Telmex' customer service in Ajijic will probably still be pathetic.

To answer CB'd question, the phone only cost w TelMex is 187p/mo. The number of times elec is a non-issue for me. CFE seems to have done some infrastructure upgrades.. I think I may have to go to Ilox office tomorrow... u all are getting me too excited... speed, streaming auto payments, no stupid stuff like corroded outside wires which require 3 visits to replace..geez..

I just got my ILOX installed. I did a speed test while the guy was still here. The highest I can get is 14MPS. Upload speed is about 8MBPS. I tell the guy "WTF you said 60 MBPS". He says that is only when connected directly to the modem via ethernet cable not via WIFI. WTF bs is that???? When I'm up north I get 300MBPS via wifi on this exact laptop.

OK, so with a little testing I narrowed it down to a very crappy wifi signal from ILOX modems. Outside with my phone I got the same crappy 14MBPS. When I took the phone right beside the modem I got 39 MBPS. Guess that's why the guy says hooking it via ethernet cable is best cause he knows their wifi signal sucks.

Now I'm Pissed.

Over a year after my pre-payment I am still weeks away from installation while the douters sign up and get service in days or weeks. Sorry Bob but that's a shitty way for ilox to treat those who had the guts to be early supporters.

I agree however I saw them working a b!ock away and knew they wouldn't bypass a install. They installed me and a few neighbors at t same time. Makes business sense.....

I agree also. Maybe time to get Tom Kessler involved regarding poor wifi signal strength. Let Ilox know that is unacceptable. Tom has the contacts.

Here´s what you have to do to address this:

First, plug in a computer via a hard wire cable to your Ilox modem and do a speed check on fast.com. If you're getting what you contracted or close, the Ilox fiber connection is good to your modem.

Second, make sure your´re not using an old computer or Wifi protocol, like 802.11b. The Ilox modem may be compatible but it won´t give you the speed.

Wifi doesn´t do vertical or thick walls. The weaker the signal or the more interference, the slower the modem. Ilox gives you one access point built into their modem. Never enough to ensure a good signal if your property is of any size. Download an app to your cell phone like Wifi analyzer and check your signal strength where you´re complaining. Below -60 you´re not going to get the speed Ilox is capable of.

So go buy more access points and hard wire them to your Ilox box. I have four Ubiquiti Unifi´s they look like flying saucers...Never have a Wifi signal problem ever. Get dual ones, i.e. 2.4 ghz, 5 ghz...the second band is a lot less crowded.

Then thank your lucky stars you have a fiber connection that is not a bottleneck to the crappy wifi service you just fixed.

If someone can show me a good Ilox direct speed, a strong Wifi signal, and poor Wifi speed then maybe that would be an issue for Ilox. Otherwise, don´t put it on them. They didn´t create your problem, they fixed it!

I will try to do all these tests today. One thing for sure is I had both the telmex and ilox modems running at the same time and when I walked pretty far away the signal from the telmex modem was 2 bars stronger on my cell phone meter.

As Tom mentioned, you can get apps for your smart phone that show you the signal strength (as a graph, and WiFi channel, no matter where you stand. "WiFi Analyzer" is a typical name. A different app is required to test the speed. I am looking at the following apps that combine these tests: ScanFi, WiFi Monitor, Network Signal Info, OpenSignal.

OK, I downloaded scanfi. Here are the results sitting about 20 feet away out of the patio. The Temex modem is the Infinitum and the Ilox is the Ilox. They are the top two in the picture. They are sitting side by side. Sorry the pic got cut off but the telMex modem shows -62 vs the -55 for the ILOX

Ilox Status Update - Page 2 211

You will notice at the very top it says Ilox 72MBPS. When I use the fast.com as recommended by ILOX it is only 14MBPS.

So which one do you think is more accurate, CBob? Does your internet seem way faster than before the ILOX hookup, or just slightly faster?

Please keep us posted on your wifi, CB. I'm only interested in their wifi speeds. I'll be disappointed if Ilox can't beat TM @ 4 or 5 down here in SAT and won't sign up if not.

And even 14MBPS is better than the 1 to 10 MBPS I was getting from TelMex. Of course when I get in the same room a few feet away is shows 40MBPS on fast.com which is what I am paying for.

ILOX recommends using Fast.Com to measure their speed. My internet is way faster because it never drops below 14 MBPS anywhere on my property. I do have two slave modems directly connected to the ILOX modem via ethernet cables because my property is 75 meters deep. TelMex speed varied every second from 1MBPS to 10MBPS max. I am happy. I was just pointing out not to expect their maximum speed via WIFI unless you are in the same room with the modem a few feet away. The ILOX tech told me the only way to get maximum speed was to hard wire via ethernet cable, period.

Bob, the "speed" shown at the top is the "link  speed", which is the rated throughput for the modem to the receiving end. It's not actually the speed. I went through all the apps and can not find one that shows both strength and speed. Except for ScanFi, which is giving me a completely innacurate reading of 7 or 8, when all other tests show between 30 and 40. In Mbps, not Kbps.

You should check the WiFi receiving device setup: is it n or ac? Older, like a,b,g is not going to get the best.

ALSO, the tech is steering you wrong. What he should have said is that direct ethernet connection guarantees you the top speed coming in, but in truth, sitting beside or near the modem and using only WiFi should get you exactly the same speed.

OK, I Googled it. My laptop protocol is 802.11n. My cellphone is 802.11 a/b/g/n.

Also because I only got the internet/phone package I have the smaller modem with only two ethernet ports. She told me the larger modem, with 4 ethernet ports was only for the people that also are getting TV. That modem looked a lot nicer that this small one. Could it put out a stronger WIFI signal? If, so I'll ask if I can just buy one.

This sounds like too big a hassle right now. I don’t care to go through all these machinations so for now I will stick with Telmex until all the kinks are worked out. My speed is enough for me right now.

No, the larger modem is no better. If I held a laptop next to their modem I got 65mbs, 5 feet away I got less than 5mbs. I purchased a router at Steren (at their techs recommendation) and am getting 30 -45 in the farthest room and 45-70 in the closer rooms and in the 30's outside. I bought the model COM 845 which had a range of 40 meters for 1300 pesos, They have a model 860 with 50 meter range at $1900 but the sales guy didn't think I needed that. Works great, don't forget to turn off the radio in the modem.

Both Ilox modems are the same except for the addition of the two ethernet ports. Needed for connecting to the TV, most likely, although any port will do. Most of us need more than two ports these days.

Any WiFi router/access point pretty much is going to have four.
