Ilox Status Update
Gents,
Here´s a bit more info on Ilox installation status:
- They are going zone by zone, concentrating right now on the prepaids in Ajijic Centro. Next week they're sending two more trucks to start west of Ajijic Centro towards San Juan Cosala.
- There have been challenges in successfully contacting all of the prepaids to schedule their installations, especially in Ajijic Centro...People are out..don´t answer their phone, etc. That has caused a couple of cases where they've installed some people who just signed up -- to keep the crews busy. Can you blame them? They have a business to run too.
- Language is an issue. If you are already installed and are having a service quality issue, and speak Spanish, you can call the office and talk to the folks there. But your better option, especially for English, is to send an email to noc@mail.ilox.mx . They´ll get right on it.
- If you´re a techie, and you´re having slow or erratic speeds, one thing you can do is log into your modem, the address is on the label, and check the signal levels. The receive level for a GPON fiber connection should be -28 dbm or better. The other day we helped a guy who was as -34. Ilox came out and respliced the connection and it cleared right up. Its rare but a cable connection can sometime stress and fail right after installation. Of course not everyone can do that. If this is gibberish to you, just mail the noc.
- If you insist on speed testing, Ilox recommends you do it with the fast.com site which are the Netflix servers. You have to take these speed tests with a grain of salt. You´re connecting to other networks that can have their own bottlenecks. Ilox doesn´t control that. They control the speed up to their gateway. Their fiber doesn´t have bottlenecks. Up to their gateway, there´s nothing to allocate or throttle. If your not getting a decent speed to fast.com, then there´s probably a technical problem. If you´re trying to tutor kids or stream some channel in rural Russia, there might be a bigger issue. If you´re do Internet phone calls, there shouldn´t but could be some donald duck events because of peak traffic. Consider getting a US number on a two port Ilox box if you want guaranteed quality, because that is protected.
- The Ilox box has Wifi but after you enable it, you´re on your own. Wifi doesn´t do vertical or thick walls. 5 ghz wifi is faster and less congested than 2.4 ghz, but doesn´t go as far. If you are having problems with your wifi, but its basically working, don´t complain to Ilox. Get a tech to help you. You can easily add another couple of access points and hardwire to them on your second floor, or on the other side of your thick walls. Download Wifi analyzer on your phone to check your signal level...Worse than about -65dbm for wifi signal is weak. Give the same SSID to all your wifi access points, even if 2.4 and 5 ghz mixed. Your device will automatically connect to the strongest one. Do make sure they are on different channels, either through auto function or manual settings. Don´t use old wifi hardware...the newer stuff is much better.
Good luck! Life at lakeside is going to be even better with high speed fiber. Lets welcome and thank the Ilox folks who are making it happen. Below, a picture of their Network Operating Center in Sahuayo Michoacan.... Victor Godinez Sahagun is the manager and the Director of the company and he´ll take good care of you..

Re: Ilox Status Update
They like to bust balls.....lol. I went and signed up for Ilox today. I got the $399 package. They will debit it off my CC every month. Pretty convenient. You need to take ID and a utility bill as proof of address. Very easy process. I asked her if they could install manana and she just laughed.

I am assuming you can pay a year in advance in cash rather than
using a credit card like the folks who signed up early?

Re: Ilox Status Update
Tkessler, do you know if the person calling customers for appointments is bilingual? Given that the majority of the new customers are probably expats I would think it would be prudent for them to have such a person making the calls.

CB , I went in yesterday about 2:00 and signed up. Cost about $1000 pesos, includes install and Modem. They offered me 3 packages, 40 Pesos, 100 Pesos, and 350 Pesos. Took the 350 peso package, the TV schedule looked pretty impressive. 2 month wait for install. Sign up took about 15 min. 6 more people came in while I was there.

Re: Ilox Status Update
I went in yesterday too and got the $399 package which is 40MB and telephone. They didn't charge me any installation fee at all. Very strange.

Beyond strange??
I've had "good enough" service with Telmex and am not doing business over the net, so didn't sign up and pay that year in advance. I imagine that the people who did, and are now finding out that new signups in their area are getting hooked up right away...are "rather" annoyed. I know there are good reasons from the company's point of view, but still...

Re: Ilox Status Update
I just checked my CC statement and they debited $28.22 CAD. Probably some sort of admin fee. Maybe they charge for installation if you get the TV package cause they have to run wires within your house to all your TVs?? Or maybe based on location? I am in Ajijic Centro.

My Telmex has been Ok too but for the same price I am looking forward to 4 times the speed. The monthly debit from the CC is also a bonus.

I imagine your phone is much busier than mine, so you can use the speed.

Re: Ilox Status Update
Whuh??? It's about internet speed and has very little to do with the phone. I will keep my Telmex line because it works without the internet when I plug my idiot phone into it during power failures. Who knows if iLox will have that capability. The iLox line just means an extra telephone number which may be of interest to CBob to separate his personal calls from his business calls. It's just a bonus for me because I would have been perfectly happy with just the increased internet speed.

Re: Ilox Status Update
Ilox does not offer internet only. You are forced to take a phone number with it. I may just keep two seperate lines. Can you get phone only service with TelMex?

Re: Ilox Status Update
Well if so I will keep both lines. Nice to have a back up. Do you know what the phone only charge is for TelMex?

I agree. No full payment up front and getting out of a recurring credit card monthly charge is a bitch. I dont pay workmen in advance. Buyer beware. What if yhoou pay up ahead and they fold. Will be a hard sell in some Fraccs

Re: Ilox Status Update
Getting out of a monthly credit card payment is simply one call to your credit card company.

Re: Ilox Status Update
And I also prepaid for iLox so will be installed when they get to Riberas. That there is excellent speed for internet is not in doubt according to those that have already been installed on TOB.
I am waiting to see if I can make calls with iLox when the electricity is out. If not then I will make the move to only have the phone service with Telmex. Not before.
