Surf fishing around Chacala
We bought some surf fishing gear and have been trying our luck in and around Chacala. Having never surf fished before the learning curve is large. First of all you need to learn to cast a 12' rod and reel it in as fast as you can. It is great exercise and after about a week I can get it out there pretty far. I have only caught one bone fish so far but am learning from the locals where to go and what lures to use. There are several good places between Chacala and Bucerius. I purchased a complete surf fishing set-up from Zaragoza Marine in PV for $4200.00. This included a 12' rod, Diawa reel, braided line, leader line, swivels and a few lures. I have lost several lures in the rocks...jaja.
One morning while I was fishing out on the rocks an old Mexican man comes by with a bottle and some line. He throws the line out and winds it around the bottle as fast as he can. After about 20 times he catches a nice Snook or Toro. I show him I am about to toss my rig in the ocean after that and we both had a great laugh. He said you just have to be in the right place at the right time. 100 casts for maybe one bite.

Those guys with the bottles are pretty good, but like your amigo said, you have to be in the right place and when they're biting.

They are using the same things as we are. They are just better at it.

Bob - checkout this website

Especially the "casting egg" - good system for working the rocks. If you order from them the wooden "blanks" have to be painted, or Mexico will not let them in. Wooden plugs are easy to make. There is a new professional wood turner moving here end of January and I have lots of recycled tropical hardwoods.

There seems to be a lot of rentals available here. We rented a friends house however there is a local rental agent whose name is Karla Lawler.

Well believe it or not we caught it about 1000 yards from shore. It was about 6 ' long (end of nose to end of tail). Took about 20 or so minutes to land. Apparently under certain conditions the sailfish come in close to shore. Usually they are quite a few miles out.
Re: Surf fishing around Chacala
Freaking awesome. Congrats. Wow. Hope it was delicious. In a perfect world you get to freeze some and take it home or can that sucker. "Bob, would you make me a sandwich ? Sure honey, is our fresh caught canned sailfish OK?" Shut that front door. Kool.
