Don't know about wealth or influence, but even flaming liberals like Lee Marvin and George McGovern.  Don't know about John Wayne or Dick Cheney.

I don't think that information is available, so we can only speculate.

There is a reason for the volunteering these days:  It gives poor young people incentives for doing so in terms of signing bonuses, promises of education, etc. that are not available to many of them in the civilian world.  Unfortunately, it also provides the opportunity for an early death or a maimed body.  Also unfortunately, the nation is not caring for their veterans as it should.

Lee Marvin and John Wayne were diametrically opposed in political ideology, one, ultra liberal and the other ultra conservative, just like John Kerry and Dick Cheney.
I always thought how ironic was Iwo Jima, Marvin was there, Wayne made a movie about it, or the fact that Wayne wanted the lead role in the film "The Dirty Dozen" and Marvin got it, but they managed a movie together, "Donovan's Reef".
