Hmmm......I have never considered anywhere (including Lake Chapala) to be "paradise" and those that do are in for a shock no matter where they chose to live. I can tell you one thing though, living down here is a far cry better than where I came from (Vancouver), from just about every perspective.
Re: Robbery gone wrong, expat died in Chapala
CanuckBob, Maybe it was paradise a long time ago, as i have read the history. I am very distressed about all of this. Possibly another part of Mexico is the answer? It was much safer in Florida. Thankyou for your honesty.

Really, what part of Florida would that be?

Re: Robbery gone wrong, expat died in Chapala
Many places were considered "paradise" a long time ago, including the Southern California I fled in 2008.
If safety is your first consideration, this is probably not the place for you. For me, the first considerations are affordability and weather. The place I lived in California before moving here was anything but "safe."
In my last neighborhood, I had 9-1-1 on speed dial and used it. After you have had a police officer say to you (as you think you are simply headed to work), "Better move ma´am, you are in the line of fire," you think differently about where is safe and where is not.

I doubt any other part of Mexico is much "safer" than this part and there are a few parts (primarily near the border, parts of Michoacán and around Acapulco) that have far more danger than here. But as pointed out above, if you are looking for a crime free environment then Mexico is probably not the place for you.
As far as ancient history goes, I'm sure they had crime here many years ago but not a good communication network to talk about it.

Also, there are a lot more people here than back in the good old days--and a lot more money and expensive stuff to steal.

Out of curiosity, Bettypearl, why did YOU move here to what some do call paradise, from a safer Florida. I know you cant be referring to the larger metro areas and suburbs. I do know the Miami Dade and the Naples areas quite well, safer? BTW where do you now live, chapala or ajijic or?
I do think that "paradise" is in the mind of the beholder. If mostly sunny skies, friends, Mexican culture, decent places to eat, and ok, not as inexpensive as in the past, or whatever else, speak "paradise" to some, that is then their version of paradise. great. Just whatever makes a paradise to one individual.
Am truly interested in what you have to say. I do hope you will be around in the next few days.

Wish I could put your mind at ease. If you take precautions there's not any reason why a person couldn't live here happily and safely. Most of us have already lived and overcome so much and things have calmed down so much here in the past 2 years. I don't think it could ever be worse than 2 years ago and so much better now. Almost all of the most recent "issues" were avoidable after a bit of investigating. Live at peace. I have friends in Florida that are providing a funeral for a woman murdered a block from them just a day ago or so. My hometown made the top 5 most violent areas to live in the US recently...crazy and most of our family still lives there, we think it's time they moved here. Sometimes they witness a bit of excitement but attribute it to the times. And if it's not people to be concerned about, how about the weather, the killer tornados ripping peoples lives apart up north? Where are you going to go?
We live out and were just commenting last week how anyone trying to get into our place would be an idiot but hey, idiots do exist ;0) Two weeks ago we traveled and spent a week in a very questionable or "hot" area and I heard a few stories that made me fearful for about 15 seconds but because we live in peace nothing happened. We saw the the bad guys patrolling but they didn't care that we were there, I just waved as they passed by. I was told they have their publicized "lists" of people they're looking for, seldom, almost never includes woman.(i don't care to comment further about that) We spent last week in Melaque and when there was a breeze and air it was livable, but not all the restaurants have air...ish...was so happy to come home!

Paper hawkers are out, they are saying that the two guys who killed Levi have been caught. They used images from cameras in the area to identify them and there are photos. Maybe there is a link .

Re: Robbery gone wrong, expat died in Chapala
Glad they identified and caught them...what a shame, one is a construction worker and the other works in electronics...wonder where they were living?
A couple of days ago people had reported seeing a lot of federal police and military combing through the ribera. Some reported the president's daughter being here but I kind of wondered if they had sent in the troops in to comb the area for the murderers since the gentleman had passed away? idk
