MEXICAN CUSTOMS....STICKER SHOCK
I bought a used golf club, and decided to have it shipped via UPS. It took 5 days.....this is the good news....price I paid for club was $300.00 USD....used....Government charged ....1600 pesos....for all fees for import.....my bad...should have had someone deliver....Just want all to be aware....shipping items to Mexico....is a roll of the dice

Re: MEXICAN CUSTOMS....STICKER SHOCK
When I visit Lake Chapala in Feb 2011, can I sell some of the golf clubs I bring rather than take them back with me, with no consequences or customs issues?
Thanks, Bill

Re: MEXICAN CUSTOMS....STICKER SHOCK
Everything I have sent to me down here is done through regular mail. It takes longer but I have never lost a thing and never have had to pay any duties. the most expensive item has been a $165.00 motorcycle tire. My PO Box in SLS is 300 pesos a year. Most of my packages come from Canada, USA, and Hong Kong.

So, if I am understanding you correctly, you can send miscellaneous used household items from the US, to Mexico and not have to pay MX Customs?
Can anyone else confirm this, or shed any light on shipping miscellaneous household items via UPS, Fed Ex, or US Mail down? I am very curious. When the wife and I move down this coming year, we won't be able to haul it all down in a car or plane, and will want to ship some of our used stuff down. We'll still be on our tourist visa for a while.
Any experiences very much appreciated.

Re: MEXICAN CUSTOMS....STICKER SHOCK
It depends on how customs and the post office is feeling that day. I've had books fabric, and vitamins come in and paid no duty. But one day the post office was feeling needy and charged me duty on the vitamins - and there was a customs slip. Another time there was no customs form but the post office employee insisted on 50 pesos "duty" or I could not have the package. And I had been receiving all these type items free of duty for years. I also had auto parts shipped to my Mexican mail box and no duty was charged.
A friend paid a whopping duty on some new clothing she ordered and had shipped here.
So I don't know if it's the phase of the moon or the need of customs or the post office.

Re: MEXICAN CUSTOMS....STICKER SHOCK
Aparently they overhauled the customs officials yet one more time. I noticed it by a huge slow down in delivery times starting in November. Times have recoved a bit but are still much slower than they used to be. I've heard that the post office in San Luis Soyatlan has no provisions for actually collecting money. I don't know about this but I do know that on most days the lady in the office can't change a 20 pesos bill for a stamp purchase. Actually she doesn't even have stamps in the office, all outgoing mail is thrown in a bag and postage put on in Gdl when it gets there.
