Sticker Shock Empty Sticker Shock

Post by Dostortas Tue Jun 22, 2021 11:08 am

I went to La Paz Liquor to pick up a bottle of bubbly for a friend’s birthday. The price went up 60 pesos from 2 weeks ago. Doing a quick check, it seems the prices went up on many if not all the items in there. Is it just them or has the price of alcohol gone up recently? They are doing renovations but the price increase seems a bit disproportionate.

From all the news items I see, the price of everything is going to shock us soon. Back home, wholesale beef prices doubling. Fruit and veg doubling. Nuts, tea, sugar. Cereal. Because of shortages caused by the pandemic, with shipping and trucking prices going sky-high. 1,000s of containers sitting idle on the docks or on cargo ships, unable to move due to costs. From Sweden to Taiwan.

Restaurants in my hometown raising prices due to shortages, higher costs, lack of staff.

Okay, interesting. Makes sense what you say. The economic fallout is looming…another covid side effect.

Corn-based products, like tortillas here. Recently went to 20/kilo at tortillerias, 22 in stores. That's 30%. Time to raise my cleaning lady's wage.

"If it grows in soil, chances are prices are skyrocketing," Ed Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA, a trading, currency data and analytics solutions firm, told USA TODAY. "Corn, wheat, soybeans and even lumber prices are surging higher, and that should spell trouble in the coming months."

Paz has higher prices than others. Try the liquor store on the west side across from the big Gym. Lake side, in the same strip mall where Bobby's used to be; now La Mexa. Right now, they are having a sale with a good discount.

La Playa by Dominos is a good place to buy liquor too.

The global, inflationary price hikes we’re seeing post-Covid are nothing more than war profiteering. Where is Harry Truman when we need him? Oh—and price hikes on corn-based products? Under NAFTA, Mexico imports 87% of its corn from the U.S. Mexico, once a net exporter of home-grown corn, was roped into this hellish corn importation “agreement” as a corporate giveaway to Cargill, the largest privately held corporation in the world and a major finder to congressional campaigns. I was working in D.C. during NAFTA negotiations and vividly remember the outcry over NAFTA. Boycot American corn? Good luck with the “long tail” of that ubiquitous product.

We have always ordered by the case, even in Puerto Vallarta. 8% discount plus a burly guy delivers from the street, then up or down the stairs. We alway tip at least 10 pesos per box.
