I read in Lisa Jorgensen's new book that she gets insurance for $242 per month compared to $750 per month in the US. But she's single. Does anyone know how much it costs for a couple?

I have no clue who Lisa is....LOL....is this a joke?  Do a search on this board for medical insurance, or go to the Medical section!

No offense jack3sea, but, anyone searching med costs knows, age, deductible, etc., all change monthly and deductible. I am rather suspicious this might be a Solo deal?

Sorry if I am wrong. Blackeye

Talk to an insurance agent.  There are several in the area.  Just like car insurance, health insurance costs depend on many factors.  Iterestingly, old cars are cheap to insure, old bodies are not.   I have Allianz and they just paid a bunch for my back surgery.  I paid only the deductible. No muss, no fuss.

Hi-

I've been looking into this for several months for a possible move down there.  I've spoken with a couple of agents in that area and, based on my age, Met Life was what they recommended.  I was given a quote of $140 per month, but there are cancer exclusions for the first 2 years.

Another good source of information is Rolly Brook's website (rollybrook.com).  On that site, I found Atlas Travel Insurance which you can renew for up to 3 years.  There is a $100k limitation on cancer.  It was considerably less than Met Life, I think it was only around $80.  You have to call their office in Indiana.  I don't think anyone sells it there.

As Jim states, there are deductibles per illness for the Met Life.  I'm not so sure about Atlas as I haven't spoken with them yet.  If you are in the Lakeside area, you might want to meet with one of the agents so they can explain how policies work there.

Lisa J moved down there last spring and wrote a book about everything you need to know.  I haven't read the book, but I thought I saw her selling them at the tianguis.  This is a link for the book on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Moving-Mexicos-Lake-Chapala-Information/dp/0985947608/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1374152647&sr=8-1&keywords=moving+to+lake+chapala

Good luck!

You get what you pay for and it is important to read th epolicies very carefully. The price depends on your age and if you are in your late 60´s the price is a whole lot ,ore than that on a decent insurrance plan. We only have major medical and are paying a whole lot more than that.

The best companies are Allianz and AXA. Get quotes from them. I have Allianz; no exclusions, no upper limit, non-cancellable. AXA reputedly has a somewhat better Dr. and Hospital network.

For those interested in Travel Insurance - if you are an American Express cardholder, you might check out their plan:
https://www295.americanexpress.com/travel-insurance/mvt.do?aetiSource=AETI&extlink=
That is what we use and it covers us anytime we are 100+ miles from home.

The $ 242 / mo quoted in the OP is in the ballpark for a reasonable high deductible and limited co-pay, per illness, unlimited policy as have also. Like has been stated it depends on multiple factors.

Yes it depends on a bunch of factors but as you near 70 prices are going up pretty steeply every year.
We have had AXA for several years and are happy but cheal they are not.

Despite the two mentions of Lisa´s self-published book in this thread, no one can find out from her how much they will pay for private insurance -- or if they can even get it. Contact an insurance agent and find out what YOU with your unique set of circumstance will pay --if you even qualify.

One problem with Mexican medical Insurance is, while they guarantee renewal, they don't, in most cases guarantee rate of annual increases beyond the age of 70.

Private Mexican Health Care Insurance Empty Nasty Replies?

Post by jack3sea Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:37 pm

I had no idea I'd get such sarcastic and nasty replies - I'd heard the people in your area were friendly - I guess that's not completely true...

The book is "Moving to Mexico's Lake Chapala: Checklists, How-To's, and Practical Information and Advice for Expats and Retirees". by Lisa J Jorgensen. Mexico Expat Press. Copyright 2012. www.MovingToMexicosLakeChapala.com.

She suggested your web board in one of the appendices in the back of the book. That's why I found it.

Thanks to those of you who gave respectful replies. I was just curious about her comment about health insurance and I'm trying to figure out whether my medical costs will be less in Mexico than in Illinois when I move there next year. I'm just beginning to do research and will be visiting the Lake Chapala area in December for the first time.

I just reread all posts/replies and assume you are aiming nasty and sarcastic replies at me.  I apologize, however the nasty doesn't work,  as I find it odd that an educated person with a question about monthly medical fees, from NOB would not include age, preexisting issues or deductible in the equation!   Good luck, you sound like a good prospect to sign up for IMSS.....razberry .....now you can say nasty and sarcastic!

BTW you may want to check out Medical/Dental history on this site for many good and bad experiences with Mexican Medical Insurance.

yes medical cost will be waaaaay less than NOB. we are canadian and paid nothing in canada. altough we had imss and now have seguro popular[no charge] but have never used either. we have a medical slush fund fer cash.
my most expensive med crap to date was 3 1/2 years ago. 4 stents,5 days in hospital[2days intensive care] 2 cardio surgeons plus other docs, nurses, etc. total cost-$23,000 cdn. hospital del carmen. there are cheaper hospitals and a lot of docs work those too.
self published books are a dime a dozen here. i never bother with any of them.

Yes, they will be less here. All things medical are far less expensive here. A visit to a Dr. is typically $200-300 pesos. A consultation with a specialist $500pesos for example.

Jack3sea,

Unless you and your wife have a lot of pre-existing conditions, I think you will find that it is considerably less.  Some people even choose to self-insure.  Also, if you're going to be residente temporal or residente permanente, that will open up some other options to you with IMSS or Seguro Popular.  These are 2 types of insurance for Mexican citizens.  This is explained on Rolly Brook's website.

PM me if you want the names of the agents I called.  I found their names and a whole lot more information by reading the forums.

I have Met Life insurance through Bellon insurance here in Ajijic. They are the best customer service around. When I bought my policy in 2009, there were 9 exclusions for the first 2 years, 30 days exclusion for cancer and 5 years exclusion for AIDS. So far they have paid about $150,000.00 on me for a catastrophic illness requiring a long hospitalization. I have also been the hospital for other conditions. They pay right away.

IMSS would not even take him due to the pre-existings. Maybe Seguro Popular Shocked

I am not sure why he thought you were nasty. He needs to look at some of the threads with the professional Shit stirring s here.

Insurance is one thing. However, the cost of the actual care here is much cheaper. Information on the person's condition would be useful. Insurance might not even be needed (or would be more expensive than paying out of pocket) to treat a pre-existing condition.

However, insurance for an emergency is vital if you do not have money in the bank. Intensive care would be $3000mxn per day in a cheap hospital, and $7000 in the best. Regular room per day is $2000 to $4000. Not expensive compared to USA, but if you need hospitalization, and cannot pay, that is another legal problem.

Oh, I can tell you it's more than that, Sam. And don't forget the services and medications, on top of the cost of the room. After my Mom's stroke, we paid a huge amount for a seven-day stay, and it was not one of the classy hospitals that the gringos like.
