Durable powers of attorney for health and finance & health care directives Empty Durable powers of attorney for health and finance & health care directives

While these things are common in the US and Canada, and elsewhere, they are not common in Mexico.

At last count, there were only 6 Mexican states that had a power of attorney that was 'durable' (meaning that it lasts beyond incapacitation). As of July 2011, Jalisco, for the first time ever has a limited durable power of attorney.... still not as effectives as a NOB durable power of attorney.

For anyone from the US, you can check out definitions, purchase forms or purchase assistance from Nolo.com, which is the website for Nolo Press, which has been around for years and years. Canadians can start with CARP, and Ontarians can find a link on my website www.lifeplanninginjalisco,wordpress.com, look under references and resources.

Most Mexican states also do not have legislation supporting health care directives, either palliative or curative. Although here lakeside you can get all sorts of folks to prepare health care directives, for a fee, that are not supported by any state legislation.

There is at least now Mexican federal legislation that allows us to make health care directives similar to what we know NOB which are legally supported for end-of-life palliative care.

If you check the website noted above, you will find a link to a Guadalajara Reporter article on the Mexican federal legislation and the Jalisco state legislation, and a variety of other supporting links.

Also on February 24th at 2:00 at LCS, in the Sala, the law firm of Espinosa & Vargas Notarios (Notarios 113 and 114) from Guadalajara will presenting information on the two pieces of legislation.

Also attending may be Ana Cecilia Villanueva who is a partner in the law firm of Acosta & Associates. The firm is the legal council for Puerta de Hierro in Zapopan. They are used to reviewing documents, apostilled and legally translated, from NOB such as durable powers of attorney for health and health care directives. Typically these documents are legally recognized and accepted at Puerta de Hierro. There are just a few execptions.

If you are working on any of your foreign documents and have questions about their validity here, you can check with Ms Villanueva. Her firm's information is listed under 'key resources' and references and resources on the Life Planning website.

Cheers,

Filoli mariachi
