Re: We have done it
From what I have read, the ones who jumped ship before war was declared were deserters (like Riley) and were punished with branding, imprisonment, and then set free. The ones after war was declared were guilty of treason and hanged...some 60 or 70, I believe. War was declared on 13 May, 1845, so how Murphy escaped hanging, I don't know. Maybe he was the victim, or should I say, the beneficiary of "Murphy's Law"Smartalex wrote:Guess I have to concede one. Still curious why he wasn't hung with the rest of 'em.arbon wrote:from WIKI
"John Murphy, Irish soldier, fl. 1846-48.
Murphy was a native of County Mayo who later served with the Saint Patrick's Battalion. He had deserted the U.S. army on 17th May 1846, and joined the Mexican army. Upon his release from prison, he received his pay from the Mexican government in May 1848, and settled in Mexico. He is ancestor to the Murphy-Martinez family of Guadalajara, and one of the few documented members of the battalion who have verified descendants in present-day Mexico."

That's because you were easily confused with another entity, i.e. if your current bio is accurate.lapurafelicidad wrote:We really aren't in the need of an attorney but thank you just the same. We handled the FM3 procedure without the need of assistance when we first arrived here and then made the change to temporary resident again on our own. Actually I found your generous offer bewildering. Prior to this last post I kind of felt a bit of antagonization in your previous responses.
People were just profiling.

Re: We have done it
No need to be bewildered. We get a lot of trolling, whack jobs posting here and some of your questions appeared to be "baiting". Most people that have been here as long as you already know these things. Also we have a regular "troll" who posts from the exact same area of Guadalajara. You do seem to be far more intelligent than this other guy though, so please carry on.lapurafelicidad wrote:We really aren't in the need of an attorney but thank you just the same. I grabbed a little bait because....being a new poster/member
Seemed to know what area I lived in.
Assumed I had Irish ancestry.
Had already become "hidden", which is rare for a new member.
Very similar syntax. (or was that sin tax?)
...but...ni modo

I just assumed a few things such as the part of the country in which you reside. I figured most of the participants on the board were Chapala area residents. I also assumed you were of Irish descent because of your username. There isn't much I can do about my writing style. I've never been accused of anything nefarious before because of the way I express myself!!slainte39 wrote:I grabbed a little bait because....being a new poster/member

I hid myself because I was getting strange private messages from a rather odd individual every time I logged on.

I sent him a very nice "Welcome to the forum" PM after his very first post about notarios, which I found to be a very knowledgeable and insightful post, especially for a "newbie",but that's the only one I sent him.RoofBob wrote:"...getting strange private messages from a rather odd individual...."? Oh no, the private messages I received were not at all like yours viajero. They were more of the gossipy type warning me about the sincerity of other posters and things of that nature. Aimed, or at least I took it this way, at involving me in petty board politics. No thank you.

I plead "not guilty", even though we had an exchange.
What I can't say on the board or to your face...I can't say...period.
