If everything is working fine I would leave it alone. If you feel the need or a
feature is available with a firmware update than it might be worth it. DO follow
the instructions exactly when updating firmware. Doing so improperly may turn
your router into a chunk of useless hardware. Another reason to update is for
security reasons like plugging a security hole in the router for example.

Does not sound like a job for the light hearted. Unknown results or improvements. Risk that you screw it up somehow.
Only when I had to did I flash the BIOS of every computer in school that needed it just before Y2K. Old BIOS calendar stopped at 1999

Very good question, Lago. The articles about these open-source updates are always intriguing; however, I'd agree with Zed and Sparks. Only someone happy with deep tinkering should try this kind of thing.
In particular, the TelMex modem/router is already modified, and who knows what a firmware change might do, so leave the fiddling for other brands. Fortunately, some will have a "restore to factory" setting, too, for when the "big mistake" happens.
I got a new mobo the other day to build PC, and because it had a built-in "easy BIOS flash" tool, I went ahead. The computer immediately refused to start. I had to do some serious and worried back-peddling to get back to square one.
