Cinnamon is more than just another food that adds flavor to your dishes and pastries. While the irresistible delicious spice can add a certain zest to your meals, it also packs powerful health benefits. The next time that you have the urge to indulge in a cinnamon-based treat, you should give in — your body will thank you. After all, cinnamon has a plethora of serious wellness benefits that should not be overlooked.

I don't remember where I read it, but the article said on type of cinnamon was hard on the liver. One type of cinnamon curls just one way and the other curls in from both ends. One is OK the other is the problem.

What is your take on this?

Post by drmike Fri Apr 27, 2012 4:01 pm

Walter,

I haven't heard of that or read it anywhere. I've read quite a bit of literature on cinnamon, mainly as it regulates blood sugar since I have diabetes and many of my patients had diabetes also.

So I don't know if you are correct or not.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I just did a search and came up with this:

http://mediconweb.com/health-wellness/cinnamon-side-effects/

But then, how much is too much? I love the stuff. One of our local farmers' market bakers makes melt in your mouth cinnamon rolls. Not the gooey topped kind. The kind you just unroll the layers and munch. Not too sweet, but very cinnamonny.

I found this page, among many others.

http://www.healthdiaries.com/eatthis/side-effects-of-cinnamon.html

I have been putting a Tblsp. or two in my oatmeal every morning. Guess I might cutback due to the possible effects. I think it does help blood sugar level a bit.

Just found this one. Now I'm sure I'll cut back, due to the condition of organs etc.

Benefits of Cinnamon Empty Re: Benefits of Cinnamon

Post by drmike Sat Apr 28, 2012 5:54 am

Walter,

Excellent article on the side effects of cinnamon. I had not read these and this article helps. I think Sparks is correct when he says a tablespoon is enough, I would probably even think a teaspoon daily would be enough to gain the benefits from the use of cinnamon. Gringal had an excellent article on the side effects of cinnamon also. The one side effect that I would be most worried about are those on blood thinners as cinnamon may thin the blood too much. Wouldn't bed wonderful if you could take cinnamon instead of blood thinners and achieve the same effects? Thank you Gringal.

Your article also states that not everyone will experience these side effects and that is true, but I would use caution. Again, I have used cinnamon mainly as an adjunct treatment for diabetes or blood sugar regulation. I have used it for years and have not had any side effects due to its chemical makeup. Another person may experience some of the stated side effects. My advice is if you are wanting or needing to control some of the conditions mentioned in my article, then try it start out at a low dose (a half teaspoon a day) and if no side effects occur increase it to a teaspoon a day.

What a wonderful tasting medicine.

Thank you for all your hard work in finding other articles both pro and con. That is what this board is about.

In Gringal article it states:

“About half a teaspoon of cinnamon daily can be taken either once or preferably in divided doses by an adult.”

Is this really true of did you mean tsp.? Even at that, that’s an awful lot. Take care

If you take a 500 ml container of cinnamon and shake about three times on a sheet of paper-that's what I have been using.

A lot of cinnamon buns and rolls would have much more than 1/2 tsp.

I tried 1/2 tsp. this AM - so that's what oatmeal tastes like! Very Happy

Parker ,
I stated (as I thought about it) to start with 1/2 tsp a day then if no side effects increase to one tablespoon. My patients never exhibited any side effects at this dosage, but then again I did not have any on blood thinners and cinnamon. Start lower if you feel better about it. I put probably a tsp worth of cinnamon on two pieces of toast when I have cinnamon toast. Perhaps that is too much for you.

Of course I'm 6'3" and weigh 255, the last time I was weighed so I'm sure that makes a difference.

gringomojado.

Thanks for your question . Actually I was referring to my closing down my offices. When I did so most had their diabetes under control and all were alive. You don't cure diabetes, the best you can hope for is keeping the blood glucose levels within "range" .Cinnamon was part of their protocol. I appreciate your sense of humor.

Thanks for the chuckle.
