Cohetes during La Cuaresma

One of the nice things about La Cuaresma is the cessation of the lighting off of cohetes in the early morning,at least that's the case where I live in Guadalajara.Is it the same at lakeside?

Unfortunately the church is not the only one using cohetes so we had some go off in the last 4 or 5 days.

What's the church's purpose in setting these things off at 5 in the morning anyway?

Usually it's pretty quiet here during Lent, but this year seems noisier than usual. Not just some cohetes, but music and even parties, etc. No idea why.

ok Viajero my theory is that the church wanted to wake up all the workers in time to go to the 6 am mass, they would get out at 7am just in time to go and work in the fields. It was a way to gather the troup and get them to be on time at work.. any other theory? Forget scaring off the evils spirits, that is a Chinese deal.

Here in Chapala, there have been lots of parties and music late into the evening most nights. Definitely louder than lent the last couple of years.

Yet I have found it eerily quiet to past couple of months....guess it really depends on where you live.

well nothing to do with cuaresma as it only last 40 days and started on Wednesday Feb13.
