Cohetes
O.k, does anyone know why the church shoots off so many cohetes? I've heard rumors, opinions and speculation but nothing definitive. Anyone got the goods?

Thanks for your lack of caring gvprod. After all, why should we learn a new language at our age? It reminded me of this:
Q: What's the difference between ignorance and indifference?
A: I don't know and I don't care.

I thought it was to get the "faithful" vertical and out for 8 am mass. Could be a Jesuit thing.

We are near the corner of Donato Guerra and Constitution and it seems this year that there are several family compounds around us participating in the cohete volleys. When you hear the tuba you get a bang.

Maybe he responded to what he perceived as a judgmental attitude.David wrote:Thanks for your lack of caring gvprod. After all, why should we learn a new language at our age? It reminded me of this:

Re: Cohetes
I agree, and since my Spanish speaking skills are woefully lacking I'm wondering if any of our Spanish speaking members might take the time to ask a priest. I really do want to know and would appreciate it. TxCanuckBob wrote:Probably need to ask the priest himself, for a definitive answer........

Re: Cohetes
The cohetes are to drive the complaining gringos back to where they came from. This is Mexico.

It is, but cuete is colloquially used throughout Mexico to signify cohete. Google cuete and you'll see what I mean.David wrote:The word is "Cohetes."

Re: Cohetes
I saw on documentary on Chiapas. One of the reasons for the general unrest was a disruption of the religious business, setup by the Catholics over 100's of years. The candles, the cohetes, everything, had to be purchased from locally approved sources. The micro-economy depended on it. The Evangelists changed all that - probably unknowingly, and gave away of lot of things to get warm bodies into their pews. This also appealed to the disenfranchised, who could never be accepted into the micro-economy as approved vendors.

Plus it should be spelled 'cohetes' seeing that it is a common, not proper noun.casi nada wrote:It is, but cuete is colloquially used throughout Mexico to signify cohete. Google cuete and you'll see what I mean.David wrote:The word is "Cohetes."

Re: Cohetes
@David, I guess the teachers in Ajijic back in the 60's did not know what they were doing. I actually learned Spanish back in the 60's in Ajijic public schools. We always called them cuetes. And I will continue to call them cuetes.
You Sir, can call them anything you want.
