Need a computer expert

I need a computer expert who can "flash" a router for me. I live in Riberas and the expert must be available to come to my house to do the job.

What type of router is it (exact make and model) and why do you want to flash it? Has it stopped working or do you just want to upgrade the firmware?

The router is a ASUS RT-N16. I want to flash it so that my IP address shows in the US so that I can get US Netflix on my TV. Also, I want my ROKU to work as well. Right now I can get US netflix on my computer because I have get usawebsites.com but can't get it on my TV.

Way out of my level here but I don't think flashing your router will accomplish what you wish. I think you need to employ a proxy if you want to appear to be located elsewhere.

I have never heard of doing this either. Your IP address is typically dictated by your ISP (internet service provider) not your router. There are many proxy services out there to change your IP address to appear like you are in other countries including the USA. I use one called Hide My IP.

I agree for the moment ... but trying to hardwire a Telmex or Cablevision router to a US address sounds like trouble. Send us a link to the instructions for out of the country

You might try search menu on this board. Check computer repair. There are several techs listed, under several threads. They may be able to direct you to help beyond their expertise, as they are well connected in the tech community

If I understand you correctly - you may want to look at a VPN service like Hide My Ass. I am planning to look into using them to access my Rogers Anyplace TV once down there so I can stream TV (mostly Blue Jays games) because it is only available to users in Canada.

Try the Yankees, they have a better track record and are easier to root for!

Flashing will not accomplish what you wish. As suggested by others, you need a VPN or Proxy IP service. These use IPs from servers in the States (or elsewhere, of course), and mask your service provider's addresses (even using public servers in the U.S., as opposed to those automatically provided by your local ISP, won't hide your source IPs). A good Proxy source is Block US.

The tech discussion is over my head but I do know baseball. For $100 (US) you can get all MLB games over the internet direct from MLB.com. It works fine here in Ajijic. Just watched the Angels 4-game series with the Jays in Toronto. Your guys were lucky to get a split. Hope they kick the Yankees ass.

Axixic, you can get Shaw Satellite down here and watch every game there is.

We use both mlb.com and Shaw Direct and get all the games. Mostly the mlb.com for pre-season games and for when Shaw Direct goes out (which it hasn't done in Ajijic yet...the coast was another matter). Use an HDMI cable to throw the games up to the Big Screen.
We are die hard Jays fans.

I must confess that I don't know which Sat Service we are signed up to - I don't think it is Shaw, I am thinking maybe Direct but not at all sure.

I do get the Rogers Anyplace TV anyway (included with other services I am already paying for) so I figured if hidemyass.com worked okay for me, it only costs about US$80 for a year and I would just do that (HDMI cable from computer to TV).

hidemyass.com has a free to try 30 day offer so I am just waiting until I'm there to actually sign up and test it out.

The problem you will experience is frozen and choppy picture on occasion as the Internet speeds are not consistent at all. Depends on the time of day you are watching. Before we had Shaw, I did OK watching hockey games via Internet, late at night, when not so many users were on-line eating up the bandwidth.

Yeah Bob - this is the kind of thing I figured I would test for during the free to try 30 day offer they have. VPN should not bog down as badly as a proxy but both are subject to the limitations of available bandwidth.

I am going to miss the 18+ MB download speed that I enjoy currently.

I suppose the next option will be to find a watering hole that plays the games, though I suspect this may be a challenge for a Blue Jays fan.

No problem at all. There are quite a few bars here with full meal deal Shaw sports packages. They are usually quite happy to put on whatever you want to watch even staying open longer than normal for those late west coast games.

Hmmmm - kind'a now wondering if I WANT the set-up I have in mind to work - kicking back in a nice bar sipping on cold Pacificos while watching my Jays lose (win, I mean, WIN - well, if we ever get any healthy pitchers) sounds like it might be preferable to watching at home (where I likely have to fetch my own Pacificos).

LOL - actually, I am only so-so about hockey. I am a national disgrace by saying that, I realize. But you must keep in mind that I was born and raised in Toronto. (What do the Argonauts, the Blue Jays, and the Maple Leafs have in common? None of them is a professional hockey team.)

But I can still get worked up watching a game of shinny in spite of myself.

Well, there's TWO of us who are cool on Hockey. My "learning to skate years" took place in Winnipeg, and it's just too frikkin' cold to actually enjoy being out on the Red River learning to slap around a puck.
