Re: Cell Phone Registration
Telefonica-Movistar has announced that it will not cut off service for those
clients who have failed to register their cellphones by the government ordered
deadline. It will go to court to fight for it's clients many of whom are poor
and unable to comply with requirements in that they lack a CURP identification
or even a birth certificate. Additionally, the company says registration by text
message has been problematic.

Re: Cell Phone Registration
I can't believe there's no way to verify if your cell phone is registered. I've tried everything, including emailing Telcel. I read somewhere that phones purchased after April 10, 2009, where suppose to be registered for the customer by the seller (Telcel) which is where I fall into -- but, who knows. Also, the text message registration doesn't work unless you have a CURP, so FMT'ers are SOL. Crazy

Re: Cell Phone Registration
When is a CURP not a CURP?. I had a friend visiting from El Tuito, she went to the delegación in Ajijic, to register her phone, she has her CURP# (same on that's on her FM2) on her Mexican driver's license. They told her that "CURP" wasn't a "real CURP" and they'd have to see all her documentation, some of which was, of course, in El Tuito, since most folks don't carry their birth certificate around with them! Fortunately she's on Moviestar, so maybe she doesn't have to worry about getting cut off so soon as the "rest of us"... so there are bona fide CURPS and pseudo CURPS... how confusing!

Re: Cell Phone Registration
you don't need your birth certificate in ajijic if you are a ferner. only your passport and fm3 or fm2.
the birth certificate is only for mexican nationals.
the office in chapala will wrongfully ask you for your birth certificate so get yer curp in ajijic delegacion. she speaks english and is a lawyer.

I do not know of a single Mexican who has registered their phone. Of course, I only know about ten, but they are unanimous in not registering. They laugh at me when I express concern about doing so God bless the Mexicans, they dislike giving the government information even more than us foriegners My attorneys here in Ajijic are laughing this off. There is no way the new world's richest man is going to allow all of his cellphones to be shut down and not provide him an income. Maybe next year. Maybe never.
The big bag of wind from Canada blows south once again with false information. I am surprised that he did not mention what a terrible drop in property values at lakeside would be caused if we did not comply immediately. That is his usual rant. Continuing to get prices to drop here until he can afford to buy.
I apologize if I have overstepped my bounds, but I will not apologize to the poster, who has caused personal hardship and damage to more than a few folks through his arrogance. I think he may have visited lakeside a few years ago for a week or two, but is now a renter in SMA, as he cannot afford to buy there, either. Zoey

Re: Cell Phone Registration
Well Zoey, most Mexicans I know registered their cell phones Friday, procrastinators and I ran into a few gringos last night and they hadn't done it yet. So who doesn't have service today? As of last night, news reports said that over 70% had registered.

Re: Cell Phone Registration
Many Mexicans ASSumed that they wouldn't cut service and did laugh, even in my office they said no they wouldn't cut service but as the deadline got closer, many registered Thursday and Friday and as there were so many people doing it, the lines and companies were saturated. That is what you get for procrastinating.
From what I've read service interruption will happen in waves as they cannot cut everybody today. They will also need to send reports to the government as evidence they are complying by cutting service.

Re: Cell Phone Registration
On my upcoming trip I wasn't going to bring my cell phone, I was just planning on getting a disposable either at the airport or Lakeside. Are these available? Just plan on using it for local calls or so B&B can get hold of us when we are out in case of emergency. I would assume if you buy one, that they will come with the registration and you will have to show your passport.
Any thoughts?

Re: Cell Phone Registration
If you have purchased a phone in the past year they register you upon purchase so you'll be fine buying now.

I think it is for phones only. If it has a phone number and you can make calls then maybe so.

Re: Cell Phone Registration
I bought a piteous (29.95, but hard to use) cell phone for use in emergencies down on the plaza near the gambling joint last fall. They told me they couldn't sell me one without seeing my FM-2 and Passport. So, okay, went back and got 'em. Then the fingerprinted me.
Guess they got what they needed. This morning, the thing is still working. Who knows about later?
BTW, if you signed up for the "Amigo" deal, you need to get at least 100 pesos worth regularly to keep your old minutes. I made the mistake of putting 30 pesos worth on at the hardware store near the Farmacia Guad., and the next thing I knew....dead phone. My old collection of minutes didn't roll over at that rate.
They don't tell you that. So, what else is new?
