Can another person drive my car?
I would appreciate info as to whether another person (who has the same visa status that I do) can drive my car WHILE I AM IN THE CAR. We are planning on going to Tapalpa tomorrow; my vision isn't that great so I need the other person to drive. Unfortunately it is too late for me to contact my insurance agent in Riberas.
Muchas gracias.

There are 2 issues, one is customs (yes they may drive your car when you are in it) and the bigger issue is insurance coverage which may be a larger problem if you are in an accident as they may take the driver to jail and not pay if your policy doesn't cover it.
Read your policy right now to see if it has specific clauses either way.

Re: Can another person drive my car?
Spencer,
My Mexican auto policy states: Section A "It is specially understood and agreed that the individuals (s) (my girlfriend's name is on the policy) and vehicle described above is insured to be driven in Mexico for the period indicated under the TERMS OF COVERAGE IN MEXICO." Section B: "The owner/operator of the vehicle is responsible for any deductions, fines, and charges relating to the use of the vehicle while in the republic of Mexico."
My Washington state registration shows my HandiMail address. Is this a problem?
Your input is always appreciated.

You'd need to read the whole policy.

I would even call the insurance company and ask them directly. They usually have some sort of 1-800 #.

I called the 800 # but no one was there who spoke English-my Spanish is fairly limited. I did try using a translation program but I couldn't understand what he was saying in Spanish.
Thanks for the suggestion; I was planning on calling.

I'd read your policy if all else fails. Scan it and pm me and I'll respond and read the policy if it is in Spanish and let you know what it says.

Ok if you don't have a scanner then go to Las Miche (2 to 3 blocks West of colon on the Carretera) as I'll be there with a friend and you can buy me a drink and I'll review your policy. I'm leaving in the next 10 to 15 minutes.

Re: Can another person drive my car?
Thanks Spencer, I really appreciate your offer but I don't drive at night (just had cataract surgery). As the Mexicans say "no problema!" I think my friend will probably drive his truck but I will clarify everything with Greta Parker. My insurance is with Seguros El Potosi. I tried calling their toll free #: 01-800-48-03-100 but couldn't talk with anyone who spoke English. I* don't know if this is an issue but my renewed Washington state registration has my Handimail Texas address and of course my driver's license has a Washington state address.
I love Mexico!
Mil gracias.

I just spoke with my insurance agent, Greta Parker, and she said that it does not state in my insurance policy who can or can't drive but she told me that anyone can drive my car as long as I am in it. She also said that the local police can only ask for my driver's license but the federal police and customs can ask for my insurance summary sheet, vehicle registration, vehicle import, passport, FM3-THESE WOULD BE COPIES. The only original that I should have in the car is the actual insurance policy booklet. So here is what I believe I should have in my car-COPIES OF:
US passport
FM3: face page, current address and renewal pages.
Vehicle import form
Vehicle registration
Vehicle title
Auto insurance summary form
ORIGINAL to be in car: Auto insurance policy booklet
We all appreciate your legal input and the work you did on the Jalisco Traffic laws (I keep this in my car also).
If you believe there are any errors of information that I received I would appreciate your letting me know.
Mil gracias!

Re: Can another person drive my car?
The Auto insurance summary form should be the original beacuse some (most?) adjusters will want to see the original.
Re: Can another person drive my car?
Yes it is possible that other people could drive your car. The person just needs those permits and license to drive a car.
