Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
We just received this email -
Dec 14 - I was notified at approximately 6:30 PM this afternoon by the Chapala Chief of Police that the criminal who shot Chris Kahr was apprehended in Guadalajara today and has confessed to the crime. It is our belief that this arrest also clears other crimes committed in the area in the last several weeks.
From Enlace Comunidad Extranjera y Seguridad Publica Foreign Liaison and Public Safety Community (assume this is a member of the new CSI group)

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
All three of those guys captured today had guns. Rather than a confession (which can be beaten out of anybody), I'd like to see a positive ballistics report from one of those guns...am I dreaming?

I knew about forensic evidence, facts and ballistics long before CSI was even on the air. I also knew about the unreliability of witnesses and recanted confessions.
I am also truly hoping that law enforcement here does not screw this up.

Don't you think it is really unique and wonderful that the community around the lake actually had somewhere between 2000 and 3000 people (have heard varying reports on numbers) show up at last Wednesday's community meeting? Where else do you know of NOB that this would happen? This is a testament to the Lake Chapala area.
I agree on the ballistics report. It would be nice to know ...

A second email has been sent out by Linda - saying that the victims have not identified the killer/person who attacked them - and basically said - don't jump to conclusions until that happens
So maybe/maybe not.

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
The title of this post is totally irresponsible! Where the heck do you Gringos get off by posting such irresponsible allegations? You were raised under a system of "innocent until proven guilty". This post was made before the witnesses even identified the suspects!
Why not turn your CSI efforts towards the dog who ate a $200 Peso bill on chapala.com. He needs to be sent off for life!

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
The title was based on the "confession" of one of the suspects with which, if you read most of the comments both here and on TOB, not many of us are satisfied with. We want forensic evidence and justice not a placebo to soothe us. You have a problem with that?

Update: The victims identified the guy.
Agree, I wouldn't trust confessions obtained by Mexican cops. Interestiing about this guy, he has been in the U.S. and just came back here 4 months ago. I haven't seen anything that says why he came back or that he might have been deported by the U.S. as a criminal up there.

Gringo (male) or Gringa (female) means foreigner but tends to be USA
folks. I don't find it offensive at all but I find it useful. If you want to be
offended by it go ahead. I am sitting waiting to cross the street in Ajijic
and an vehicle with SD plates comes by ignoring the crosswalk and all
the people. I just say those crazy gringoes and start laughing and the
whole group of mexicans laugh with me and life goes on. The word does
have its uses and yes I know in some places it is not used as a good
word. I think it is a very useful word and saves time.

Great discussion about the word here:

I prefer "expat" personally.

Ferret:
Since I refer to myself as a Gringo, I didn't intend anything derogatory. Then again, there are those who do feel it is a derogatory term.

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
My understanding of this is that the Kahr family identified the guy face to face. Their identification matched the ones done in Chapala exactly. All that's left is a ballistics report on the same caliber gun taken off this guy to see if it was the same one used in the shooting on November 29th.

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
"you gringos" is same as "my nixxas" (in in this case:"yo nixxas"). & not all blacks speak that way. its a choice of speech, depending upon social class. i never heard the "G" word untill i came here to visit 10 yrs. ago. i thought it was a mexican word (street slang), i did not know what it meant. then i found out it was english (??). sounds like a lower class southern term. this is not the language we speak in my area of the U.S. i have never seen the "G" word used in journalism, expect in the "guadalajara reporter". (they also used the term "botched"- for a major headline). "gringa" is similar to words like "wigga", which is also low class slang. when i hear "gringo/gringa", i think of big fat slobs in shorts, w/ heavy regional accents. sometimes stinking of cigarettes, & alcohol. OR skinny, bad teeth, looking like a plucked chicken, stinking of alcohol & cigarettes. since i have not seen many white folks here who differ from this image, i assume the "G" word says it all. speak for yourself. (this is neil's choice for his screen name. he certainly does not sound like one. but each to his own).

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
"Gringo" most assuredly is Spanish, and in Mexico normally refers to a white non-Hispanic U. S. citizen, and by extension any foreigner of European extraction. Pretty much what "Anglo" means in English, and in itself it is no more disrespectful than that word or "Chicano", for example. I have seen Mexican news stories about some "gringo" getting into trouble in Mexico when the subject was a Mexican-American, but that was just mischief on the part of the reporter or headline writer.

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
so gringo is NOT slang? chicano is a real word? perhaps these words are in the spanish dictionary. they sound kind of vulgar to me. the "guadalajara reporter" is vulgar. reminds me of the "new york daily news". paper you would wrap fish in.

Ricardo:
Here in New Mexico, we have plenty of Chicanos and it is a sense of pride for many in the Hispanic Community. When talking to them, they get a real kick out of me referring to myself as a Gringo. Since so few of them have any actual experience in Mexico, they also refer to us as Loco Gringos for traveling to Mexico.
We have a female Governor of Hispanic heritage and just this week, there was a big rhubarb when a black female legislator referred to the Governor as: "a Mexican from the 4th floor". To compound this story, there is some question (unresolved) whether or not the Governor's grandfather arrived in the US legally or illegally.
As far as I am concerned calling myself a Chinese Gringo is all in good fun and nothing more should be made of it!
For John: If your are referring to whatever comments susan may have made then possibly. But I was the one who initially used the terms: "You Gringos" and answers to that allegation are on topic. Please try to remember, you are not in control here.

Re: Criminal Caught that killed Kahr
Susan sorry Gringo/a is a word in the dictionary and it is not a bad word
as you have suggested and has nothing to do with the N word. Why do
you like to stir things up like this? This is a waste of time and sometimes
I think Susan is a waste of time. I will continue to use an appropriate word
for the appropriate use and I don't care what Susan or anyone thinks.
Sheesh
