New Telmex Modem? Empty New Telmex Modem?

Post by Pogo Wed Aug 28, 2024 4:20 pm

I have Telmex glass cable and a Telmex modem. Just lately, the modem seems to go off line randomly. From the research I have done, this is not unusual. Furthermore, I understand that getting a new modem from Telmex is a long, involved and often not successful process.

I have decided i would like to buy a new modem that is compatible with Telmex, that is reliable and performs well. However, I don't even know if that is possible.

If it is possible to buy a new modem and replace the Telmex modem, I would appreciate any advice anyone on the board may have regarding what to buy and where to buy it.

Thanks in advance.

New Telmex Modem? Empty Re: New Telmex Modem?

I have, in the past, bought brand new Telmex modems from Mercado Libre. I am not familiar with the  Telmex modem that you are describing but I would start there. I no longer have Telmex so am not knowledgeable about what they are currently providing.

edited to add: I called the 1-800 number for Telmex and talked to an English speaking tech who gave me a couple of newer models of router to order at the time. She was well aware that Telmex does not necessarily provide NEW modems (or even properly refurbished and tested ones). I bought both her recommended choices and had no further problems. Now I have TotalPlay and am delighted by both the consistency, the speed and the customer service. Unfortunately it is not available everywhere so you have to do what you can with what you have available.

I’ve been happy with Total Play as well but from what I read it isn’t always great depending on location. I kept Telmex but downgraded it to the 389 peso plan.

We do the same.....TotalPlay, backed up by basic TelMex.

Keeping Telmex also gives one of us their own bill to prove residency, as CFE would only allow 1 name on its bill when we bought this house in 2017. In 2008 they allowed both our names on CFE account for a different house.

New Telmex Modem? Empty Re: New Telmex Modem?

I recently upgraded my Telmex connection from copper dsl to optical fiber which included a new modem.  Except for a line cut, down the street, my service has been rock solid.

Could you elaborate on “ seems to go off line randomly”?

Swapping out for a modem purchased elsewhere will not work.  It has encrypted credentials that allow it to connect to Telmex’s network. I know this well as I’ve been hacking mine for a project.

There’s an automated test that can be conducted calling Telmex support and navigating the spanish IVR.  English support is available but a challenge to reach.  I can give you an assist if you’d like…

Fyi, I don’t rely entirely on Telmex for my service, Starlink is my backup.

The other great thing about TotalPlay is they give you access to the 1000's of TotalPlay hotspots throughout Mexico.

New Telmex Modem? Empty Re: New Telmex Modem?

Thanks for all the knowledgeable replies and suggestions. To answer one, what is happening is that I will be online using gmail.com via Firefox. I will click send and I get a message that says I am offline. I check my internet connection and sure enough, I am offline. I click it back on, it reconnects and I am good to go. I click send again and the email is sent. This happens randomly while using Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari. I have done every maintenance and repair step available for my computer. All report no problems. From every thing I know and every thing I have done to fix this, it does not appear to be a computer problem. It clearly appears to be a Telmex problem. I have talked with them endlessly going through all their paces and the problem has not resolved. In fact it just occurred again while typing this reply.  I think my solution is to do as others have suggested and get Totalplay while leaving Telmex on as a backup. Any suggestions as to the easiest way to get Totalplay would be appreciated. I just want Totalplay internet. It appears that I cannot get Totalplay internet service without getting Totalplay TV which I don't really need or want since I would guess it is all in Spanish. Any suggestions as to how to simply acquire Totalplay internet service would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest you call or whatsapp Uzziel. 331-157-7160 He speaks perfect English and will help you.
You CAN get internet and telephone without TV. I have it. I could have ported my Telmex phone number but found out too late to do so. If you are keeping your Telmex service then that point is moot.
I am also wondering if, perhaps, you have a voltage or other electrical problem with the outlet into which your Telmex modem is plugged? Worth checking out because the same thing will happen with the TotalPlay modem if that is the case.

edited to add: is something else starting up on the same line? Wondering if a UPS might solve that problem?

Thanks again for the help and connection to Uzziel. I have a UPS on that line. It may be protecting me more than I know. I will check the outlet for the modem.

Update: Just had TotalPlay installed and it is working just fine. The problem I was having with my Telmex modem has disappeared - which is what I hoped for. Uzziel came and did the installation. What a great guy - responsive, reliable, friendly, efficient, knows what he is doing. Thanks for the recommendation, ferret. I will certainly recommend him and TotalPlay to others. And thanks to all who chimed in with good advice.
