Now if they could just come up with something that stops mosquitoes from reproducing. Because the little buggers are still annoying and irritating even if they're not transmitting disease. Call it mosquito birth control. ;)

Yes, the dunks work if you have open water around. Easiest is to simply remove sources of open water. I turned my fountain into a raised garden bed by putting small pea sized gravel into it and placing plants in pots (no saucers) on the gravel. I also seasonally remove the saucers under my plants in other locations... i.e. remove saucers during the rainy season. There were MANY mosquitoes when I moved in here and now there are very few.

The strategy is to place small bowls of water with dunk all around your open areas. The water attracts the mosquitos, their larvae die in it.

Thanks! That is a definitely a strategy I will be trying. I will also be telling my kids for their property in Northern Ontario. They have already started up the propane unit they have... this will be the 7th year... which also does a really good job as well since mosquitoes don't stray that far from their place of birth.

Are those dunks toxic? Because you can just spray vegetable oil on the surface of a container of water set out to attract the mosquitoes, which cuts off the oxygen supply in the water, killing the mosquito larvae.

And there were experiments done in a part of Africa about 20 years ago, where dengue and malaria are prevalent, where they found that setting out fermented fruit juice, which, along with fermented flower juice, is the main diet of mosquitoes, with some boric acid in it, knocked the mosquito population down by 90% in a week! I have an article about it from the science section of the Vancouver Sun that I saved and still have somewhere.
