No need to learn anything. They all speak fluent English.

Re: CB's Adventure
Yes, CB, thanks for the info. I'm also looking for another place to live and have a friend from SF who lives there and loves it. It IS far. I'm also comfortable in the Asian culture, love the food, but would never be able to communicate with local people. Difficult language.
My ex husband was a Vietnam vet and I know it is brutally hot and steamy in the summer and with climate change that will likely increase.
Oh, they all speak English! In the tourist areas anyway. I've heard Vietnam vets have retired there.

Bob, out of curiosity did you use a travel agency or did you plan your own trip? If its a travel agency could you share the name. Thanks

Re: CB's Adventure
My daughter is a flight attendant who has travelled all over Asia previously so we planned our own trip and itinerary.

Well you could live in northern Vietnam where they actually get 4 seasons.Trailrunner wrote:Yes, CB, thanks for the info. Well I'm back. It was the trip of a lifetime and I wish I could have spent 6 months there. Absolutely loved SE Asia. The people, the food and the culture was amazing. Maybe one day..........

The US lost the war and lost SE Asia, didn´t that turn out awful……... :roll
Otherwise, the corrupt oligarchy could still be running the country.

Re: CB's Adventure
Yep and no "cartel" background noise. In Malaysia I believe they have the death penalty for drugs and the likes......

They used to have the death penalty in Thailand for selling drugs but then the in 1980 when I was in Thailand there were plenty of fearless opium users in the golden triangle so who knows if the death penalty works...

Re: CB's Adventure
Yeah but they don't hold the citizens hostage like they do in Mexico with their roadblocks, vehicle jackings, brutal display of murders, narco banners, etc., etc. They operate far more discreetly.

True. I like the way you put it - "the cartel background noise". Their increasing ever-present ominous presence. Tired of it. I don't think SEAsia employs the impunity that MX does.

Re: CB's Adventure
Nope they shoot them all there....no liberal bs. If a road block was set up down there the military would simply shoot them all. If you are thinking Vietnam look at Hue or Hoi An. These were my favorite towns. Not too big and awesome weather.

Re: CB's Adventure
Best to just Google them cause I'm not sure about the details. I spent all my time on tours or in the bars and food stands.....I just liked the vibein these two towns.
