Three half minute rests
Trailrunner… could you run this information by the cardiologist that you work for, please?
For those who get up at night from sleep or early in the morning.
Each individual must take note of the three 1/2 minutes rule.
Why is it important? Three 1/2 minutes will greatly reduce the number of sudden deaths. Often this occurs: a person who still looks healthy has died in the night.
Often we hear stories of people who say, "Yesterday, I was chatting with him. Why did he suddenly die?
The reason is that when you wake up at night to go to the bathroom, it is often done in a rush. Immediately we stand, and the brain lacks blood flow.
Why are "Three 1/2 minutes" very important?:
In the middle of the night, when you are awakened by the urge to urinate for example, the ECG pattern can change.
Because in getting up suddenly, the brain will be anemic and causes heart failure due to lack of blood.
You are advised to practice the "Three - 1/2 minutes," which are:
1. When waking from sleep, lie in bed for the 1st, 1/2 minute;
2. Sit in bed for the next 1/2 minute;
3. Lower your legs, sitting on the edge of the bed for the last half-minute.
After three 1/2 minutes, you will not have anemic brain and heart will not fail, reducing the possibility of a fall and sudden death.
Share with family, friends & loved ones. It can occur regardless of age; young or old.
Sharing is Caring. If you already know, regard this as a refresher.

Where did you hear this? Sounds like something out of Farmers Almanac.

It makes perfect sense, regardless of the source.

I’m questioning the rationale. It’s true that as we get older it takes longer to get our bearings, we are weaker and our coordination is not as good. But to say the brain is anemic leading to heart failure is far fetched.

Re: Three half minute rests
Yeah, agree. It's a little simplistic. We die of sudden death due to the heart going into a lethal rhythm or a blockage of blood flow in a coronary artery.
When we sleep, our vital signs slow down and it takes less effort for our hearts to perfuse our bodies/brains while we are lying down. When we sit up normal hearts compensate by increasing the rate and rising to the demand.
People who die in their sleep are found peaceful looking and still lying down in bed and all tucked in.
I will run your theory by him when he returns, Ferret.

Thanks Trailrunner. It's not MY theory. I received it as an e-mail and wanted to know if there was any merit to it.
I gotta tell ya that, if I wake up in the night to pee, that minute and a half is IMPORTANT.

Gotta do those Kegels, eh?
I eagerly await the answer from the cardiologist.

Re: Three half minute rests
For anyone who is concerned about sudden death I URGE you to visit your cardiologist for a cardiac wellness check. Do it!
We had a very cool fit younger guy come in a couple of years ago who was a runner and wanted to power up his running and wanted the opinion of a cardiologist as to whether that would be prudent or not. Dr. Garcia got very quiet while watching his heart on the ECHO. We put him on the treadmill and about 1 minute into his stress test I told him to ask Dr. G how hard he could work out. "Not at all!" was Dr. G's reply as he shut down the treadmill. The pt was whisked off to Guadalajara for an enlarged aortic aneurysm repair. Although he said thank you for saving my life, this pt SAVED HIS OWN LIFE!
Save your own life, get a cardiac checkup.

Was the aortic valve involved. I know someone who has Marfan syndrome indications but I hate to mention it to him.

Re: Three half minute rests
I don't remember about his AV. He didn't get a replacement or anything though. Sorry, can't remember.
I did ask him if he had Marfan's but he was unaware of it. He is tall and thin though his feet and fingers didn't look like Marfan's.
Maybe you could just nudge your friend into a cardiac wellness checkup? Does he have symptoms?

He is in perfect health and he couldn’t afford to do anything if he came down with something. He does have elongated fingers and protruding jaw.

Re: Three half minute rests
I wonder if there is a simple blood test. . . I'll ask Dr G. If there is a test, and he tested positive, maybe he could get SP/Civil interested. Or a teaching hospital.
Good that he is asymptomatic but all are until it begins to leak or tear.
How old is your friend?

Mid 40s. But as you know people here don’t intrude into others’ lives. You never know how they’ll take it. There are people who even believe in casting spells and you don’t want to go there.

Yep. You are right. That's a hard one. If you hear him complain of any suspicious symptoms . . . Certainly not all Marfan's pts get disecting aneurysms. Let's hope he will be one of the lucky ones.

I would probably pee in the bed if I did that! When you need to go at my age you need to go immediately!
