Japanese
For anyone that likes Japanese food, and hasn't done it yet, give the Japanese restaurant Masayume,in Ajijic, a try.
It's exceptional.........a small place on the Carretera, between the post office and Banco Mulltiva, same side of the street.

Re: Japanese
I think that is the restaurant that used to be located right inside El Barco. Excellent sushi although I haven't been to their new location since they moved a year or so ago.

That is correct.
The sushi that is labeled masayume on the menu contains no rice or cream cheese, just a combination of seafood.

What? No rice? How can that be sushi?

The explanation was written in Japanese characters and I couldn't translate it.
So I'm going on a faith based assumption.
If it wasn't "sushi", I want my money back, no matter how good it tasted.

Re: Japanese
I was told by a couple of Japanese maestros that came to Mexico to give art classes that there was a great Japanese restaurant in Andares mall. it has something like 8 seats.. ANyonne knows the name of it. You have to make reservations or no seats are available.

Yes, that's what I've heard too. Great sushi, high prices.
What about the Container Lake place? I've seen some nice LOOKING sushi there.

Re: Japanese
Yes, Juni-ko is expensive (relatively speaking) but good sushi restaurants usually are. Rolls are less expensive. The Sashmi is usually the kicker.
I have heard the rolls at Lake Container are good as well. The Mexicans seem to like cream cheese in their rolls. I always order it without......

One thing I've learned about dining out in Mexico: stop worrying about "authenticity" much. If it tastes good, enjoy it.
Mexican cooks seem to tweak just about everything; some to the point of being a very far cry from the ethnic restaurants we were used to in the States. Cream cheese sushi? Haven't tried it yet, but.....open mind and mouth.

The big, and very popular and busy Japanese restaurant, in Andares Plaza is Moshi Moshi, on the main floor on the right side restaurant row when you enter from Patria. They have conveyor belt sushi plus an extensive menu of Japanese fare.
La Docena is a very, very fine restaurant but have never tried the sushi there.
Suehiro on La Paz is still by far and away the best Japanese restaurant in GDL. I have a multitude of Japanese food, sushi loving progeny in my family over several generations, so I fancy myself as an amateur expert.

Strange, but I hear the same complaint from Mexicans when they travel NOB and want "Mexican" food. Perspective is everything.

I was looking forward to the kind of Mexican food we used to get in the Monterey Bay area in California.
No such luck, yet. There were some great "Mexican" restaurants there. Not cheap, but really good.
Authenticity? Probably at our local street food stands.

I think the best authentic Mexican food in the area will be at Viva Mexico in San Juan Cosala.

Re: Japanese
The school of cermics brought Japanese artists and masters to work here and they went to this restaurants called Juni-ko and they said it was very good. I have yet to go to a great sushi restaurant in Mexico and I could not remember the name of it but when Bob came up with the name , it came back.. I am not interested in the other restaurants mentioned, I have been to them and that is not what I am looking for. I will try this one before I give up..I was told to make reservations because it is very small and you just cannot drop by.

Re: Japanese
I liked the meal I had today at Mayasume very much. Fresh grilled vegetables, "fried" rice and a combo beef/chicken/shrimp Teppanyaki. (Don't feel one way or the other about sushi so no big deal to me.) I'll be back for more from the back of the menu.
The self-proclaimed "gourmand" on TOB has already condemned Mayasyume without trying it so I encourage others to head over there to enjoy some good food.

"Mayasume" - uhhh, no. (minus 1)
"Mayasyume" - uhhhhhhh, no. (minus 2)
(But several of those letters are in the correctly spelled name of the restaurant.)

Love Japanese food, looking forward to trying it. Are the people who own the restaurant or cook there Japanese? Hopefully?

No different than most places in the US outside of major cities. The garbage a lot of places try to pass off as Mexican are barf city. Cheddar cheese topped tasteless beans and rice, taco salads? Fettuccini alfredo is unheard of in Italy.
