Re: UBER
I haven't seen anyone mention the september15 murder of a Cabify female rider in Mexico City. Just wondering if other companies are screening their drivers as well as Uber

Remember that Uber drivers are generally regarded as scabs. anyone with a union background should avoid using them.

Right on, Bob.
They're not scabs, there's no strike. And I've been a union member most all my working life.

Re: UBER
No, they are not scabs. The same line of thinking would mean that you shouldn't patronize other "non-union" businesses either. That would be about 99% of them around here........

Re: UBER
When I was in Vegas recently, I had to take a taxi (didn't have my phone to get Uber) and asked the drier what he thought of Uber. He said, "It's destroying an industry."
I thought maybe its an industry that needs to not only keep up with technology and pricing competition, but that needs to be "reconfigured."
Taxis have for too long been way overpriced and with less than great service.
Keep up or die.

Here's a twist. I met a guy at a Pemex station yesterday that was filling up his cab and struck up a conversation. He owns 5 yellow cabs operating in Guadalajara plus two Uber cars. How's that for hedging your bets on which way this thing is eventually going to go.

What a smart man. I've been trying to talk my neighbor taxista into selling his cab and becoming a UBER driver but he doesn't see the value in it.

Re: UBER
In Vancouver all the city cab companies have developed there own app and operate much like UBER. You order via the app and a central dispatch sends the closest company/driver.

He might be the same guy I used last year. He told me he drove a taxi during the day and drove for Uber on his off hoursEzzie wrote:Here's a twist. Re: UBER
But can you see the fare before the taxi drives up - and can it be billed to your credit card automatically. UBER have the software designed and its great. We do like Cabify though - but not as good as UBER in terms of the app and billing experience.

Re: UBER
That is correct. UBER is not allowed with the city limits of Vancouver however it is available in all the outlaying municipalities. I don't have the app. I saw my son use it when I was there about 4 weeks ago.
I do believe UBER is going to be allowed in Vancouver very soon though.

Zedinmexico wrote:Yea have to agree about local Taxi with a few exceptions. Tried living without a car for a few years and gave up and bought a city car. We tried without it just didn't work for us. Ended up begging for a ride to Ajijic at night. Worked most of the time but don't understand why younger local taxi drivers don't drive at least til 10pm. Is ripping off taxi drivers at night a problem here?? You wouldn't think a bus could run in high season til 11pm on weekends right?
Does anybody know a taxi driver or bus driver well enough to get a straight answer???

I know one taxi driver who was mugged on the libramiento. They put a gun to his head. This was more than a year ago.

Re: UBER
We of ordered an UBER to go to the TelMex Auditorium last night. It said the driver would be here in 17 minutes. After about 4 minutes it said it was looking for another driver so I guess the first guy cancelled. The next driver was here 12 minutes later. The quoted fare was $279 pesos which I thought was ridiculously cheap for a 1 1/2 hour fare. When we arrived he told us it was $360. I still thought this was a bargain so didn't argue. When we left the event there was about 50 taxis parked out front. I thought it would have been very difficult for an UBER to find us so we started talking with a taxi driver. The guy quoted us $1000. I told him UBER brought us here for $360 and told him I would just use them. He quickly lowered to $600 so we took it.

Re: UBER
Had to spend a week in Guadalajara on personal business last week. Used Uber all week. Worked just fine. Far better than waiting for a taxi, then negotiating a fare and then hoping he knows where he is going. All you need is the Uber app. You sign on, give credit / debit card information and it takes all the uncertainty out of travel. You need not even speak to the driver. He knows where you are going before he gets to you. You can watch him approaching with an estimated time of arrival. And the transaction is all done on line; no worries about having the right amount of cash. I am sold.

And you don't have to give them any credit card info. You can change the settings to indicate that you will pay cash.
I just looked on UBER and a trip from Ajijic Centro to Costco on Lopez Mateo is quoted at $276.00 mxn.

Can someone please give me information as to how I can contact a Uber driver here in Ajijic ? We need someone willing to take us on a return trip to a medical clinic in Guadalajara for tests. Thanks.

You need to download the UBER app onto your smartphone.

What can people do that don't have a smart phone??? I have one , but my friend who is here for a month doesn't have one. She called 3 different taxis...none showed up in Chapala! Where she is staying is very easy to find....even called the dispatcher to no avail.

Re: UBER
Unfortunately UBER ( and all others like them) is only available through their app. That is the who!e point of UBER. If you have to pick up the phone you can either call a taxi (which apparently don't show up) or any number of private drivers available around here.

Can I get an Uber from lakeside to Guadalajara and then get one back?
The back part is what I'm concerned about.
Thanks.
