Electric meters
I have heard, if you have a pool, to get a second electric meter just for it. That way you have two meters that have to meet the higher readings before you get hit with the higher costs. Has anyone heard of this?

Re: Electric meters
You will not have that option, unless there are already multiple meters. One meter is permitted for each living area, which must include actual household arrangements with separate addresses, not for just a pool alone.
Solar panels may be a good idea.

Re: Electric meters
And a separate unit is defined by a kitchen and a separate entrance so if you have a stand alone casita with a kitchen then you could apply for another meter and put the pool on one of them.
Re: Electric meters
In all likelyhood your pool pump is not an energy hog. If it is, get a new, more efficient one.

Re: Electric meters
Thanx for the replies. I asked because someone with a real estate company had told me that he could get another one installed for me for "X" amount of pesos. I don't feel the pool pump is a bad user of power, as the renters in the house we bought, have not said anything about the power usage that they pay for.

Re: Electric meters
If you know the amperage of the pump and whether its 120 or 240 volts you figure our the energy use (watts) per hour.
My new pool pump running 5 to 6 hours per day uses about half my total monthly kilowatt usage. Thank God for solar.

Re: Electric meters
Yep, my pool pump running the same hours accounts for about 1/2 my total usage too.
Re: Electric meters
There is another trick taht reduces electric bills
if you only have 110 volt service , get 220 v multi phase.
Even with the same consumption the 220 v meter will read lower. This is due to the method used to calculate consumption

Re: Electric meters
Tekno we don't have the same electrical voltage here. Service to a house is 127 volts plus or minus 10% (yes that is the spec. ) and you can have one two or three phase coming into your house. For example I have all three phases in my house. Three phase is everywhere in Mexico other than the boondocks at the end of power wires. Yes I understand what you are saying Tekno and Tekno is correct on this. I know it is true with Analog meters but is the measuring method the same on the new digital meters?

Re: Electric meters
I've got to have someone come out and find out what is drawing so much power. Ever since we moved here last Jan, the bill keeps climbing. Last bill was over $8500 pesos. I had CFE check the meter, it is good but they found two of the main wires in back, were loose which would draw more power. He tightened them, I watched, the went in after two weeks to change the name on the account to start over again. The usuage for those two weeks was over $2000 pesos. WTF?! Out two water pumps, pool & house water use 13.8 amps & 13 amps respectively. The pool runs 6 hours a day, and the water as needed. I have heard of people installing a 'governor' which I heard is a no-no, but at this point.....?!

Re: Electric meters
Sounds totally outrageous. I have a pool, 3 fridges, washer, dryer, pressure pump, 5 tv's, etc, etc and my largest bill ever was $4300.
Re: Electric meters
No kidding! Other things are 1-frig, washer/dryer (gas), 2 TV's, 2 computers, 1 security camera set up, 4 cams, 1 moniter, micro, toaster oven. I need a GOOD electrician. Any recommendations?

Re: Electric meters
Then you need to check the actual draw of every pump and appliance. Something is very wrong.
Re: Electric meters
Yes, that's why I am looking for a good electrician. Anyone you would recommend?

Re: Electric meters
None I would recommend. Maybe get ahold of Brad Grieves ( the house inspector) and ask him for a recommendation.
Re: Electric meters
He did our house when we bought it. I'll call him. Thanks Bob.

Re: Electric meters
No, I had CFE seal the meter and there are not any unusal wires to or from the meter. When I shut off my breakers, there is no activity in the meter.

Re: Electric meters
NE, When you find an electrician that is smart enough to actually figure out the problem, could you please let me know their name. I have had the same issue for years !!
