I think there's a thread on this, but I couldn't find it.

Good link when I used it.  Basically, CFE has come up with a scheme to get rid of meter readers and make the customer do all the work, including a monthly task of getting it read on your own and making a special trip to Chapala to pay the bill.  BAH!!

NOB the smart meters transmit their status to the power company. That was also to get rid of the meter readers among a number of things. Mexico will follow with the same meters I'm sure. This "customer read" thing won't last long. Besides it sounds like a business opportunity for some young hacker who can upload false info onto these cards.

And what do you want to bet they'll all remain on the payroll just like all those non-working Pemex "workers?"

BAH is right!

A company that size is always in need of new experienced workers.  So I imagine you are correct.

That's not a company. It's a government agency that can't produce power at reasonable prices or distribute it reliably.

But I'll bet it has very big payrolls already. :)

What I think is interesting, and this from that U.S. Engineer who runs a satellite shop here, that these meters are supposed to connected to CFE via an ethernet type cable. There is a town in Mexico where CFE is experimenting in providing power, internet and voice over internet telephone. The CFE has most of the infrastructure in place - they just need the repeaters and servers.

I had read an article before I moved here which stated that an experiment was being done in one of the southern states, I think it may have been Kentucky. They had one whole town hooked up through the power grid and the speed in which one could send email, faxes etc was incredible. I have been here almost 7 yrs and I wonder what happened with that and whether the phone companies were able to block it.

I know that the Santorini water guys in my neighborhood use a white plastic card to access the customers account when they deliver water -via the CFE meter.

CFE Telecom of Mexico Deploys Largest All 100G Network Using Xtera's Nu-Wave Optima(TM) Platform

This network will be wholesale, will not provide services to end users, such as CFE currently does
