Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
Just received an email from a friend who said:
“Get ready for a mass exodus of Canadians from the lake!
With Shaw TV cracking down on Mexico accounts, many people will lose their satellite TV. Canadians cannot exist without hockey, Canadian football and curling for entertainment. Plenty of new homes going on the market.
But you will hear rejoicing from the restaurant wait staffs because the non-tippers are headed north!”

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
Has anyone used "Slingbox" recently? I had one my first trip Lakeside, about seven yrs. back. It worked OK, depending on connection. I could get whatever my kid paid for on cable. Had a problem, and haven't used it since. Wonder if the system is better now.

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
I know someone who uses one and they say it works good. I suppose you just need to ensure that the person on the other end is somewhat tech savy so they can troubleshoot it if there is a problem.

I've been using it for over 3 yrs and it works well. It's not the same picture quality, but more than sufficient for us. Bob, it does require a little more tech help than normal, but on whole it's a good alternative. We have ours connected to a Tivo unit, so we record all our shows and watch them when we want.

Juan- What model do you have? Any idea how much bandwidth they use?

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
We've used a Slingbox Solo for the last 2 years. It works OK with 600 kbs, and works well at over 800 kbs, except for live fast moving sports. The resolution to watch NBA SD broadcasts is a bit grainy.

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
We've actually got 2 Slingboxes at my son-in-laws house that are model 2 & 3 I think. Whenever he decides to upgrade his, we get the prior model. The better the bandwidth the better the picture. I'd say snowyco is about right. Between the Slingbox and Netflix we've got most of our TV needs satisfied.
Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
Not quite on topic, but just downloaded Shaw's new guide, Looks very good and user friendly, I have not yet figured out where my favorites are. I down loaded the pdf manual and hopefully that will help.

If you didn't download it yet it will happen automatically on August 7th. I read about it on the Shaw website.

It's a piece of junk, some developers wet dream. I've read the manual, a search of the PDF didn't find "favorites" anywhere, I've pushed all the buttons, it appears favorites are gone, now you see ALL channels in your subscription not just the 10 or 20 you actually watch. Plus, I've not been able to get rid of the video on the right side, I don't want it, don't need it, I want nice large print on the guide and that's all. As I said, another wet dream in the name of cool.

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
I would like to revise my earlier thoughts on the new guide, it is awful and difficult to use. I did find favs and ended up with parental blocks on half the channels. And like David says we all get the new guide Aug7. Diamondtuffy you are right on.

HD update
Your date for automatic download depends on what model of HD you have. The date for me is August 12.David wrote:If you didn't download it yet it will happen automatically on August 7th. I read about it on the Shaw website.

Still trying to figure out favorites, but apparently, you go to options, parental controls, enter, choose user, then permission, then edit list. all of which makes no sense, the fav button on the remote does not seem to allow set up.
As to the guide there is no option to turn off mini screen so all we see is the reduced guide. Isn't progress great.

Try pushing guide button a second time and maybe it will switch between two versions of guide at least that's how it worked before.

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
Funny! We never complained when we had to turn a crank to ring up the operator on our cell phone; two dry cells in an attractive wooden box mounted on the wall. Had to wait sometimes, as it was a 4 party line; some folks had 8 party lines. Phone number was 11F2.
Ten years later, we got TV, which had that indian test pattern and a couple of channels, which could be seen through the snow....sometimes.
Never thought to complain.

Ok, it appears that newinajijic has found the gold deep down in the menus, who would imagine a bunch of geriatrics would need to be poking into "parental controls"? You now have to create a "user"? - etc but one MAJOR SUGGESTION, before they automatically dump this on you, GO IN AND WRITE DOWN YOUR FAVORITE CHANNELS, of course they don't bother to tell you that up front and now I'm sorting through a hundred + channels trying to remember and find the 15 I normally want to watch - wow, implementation? This is an example of why they don't allow people our age to remain in upper management - WE'D FIRE IDIOT UNDER 30 THE FIRST DAY!

Well isn't that just another example of how highly regarded Shaw customers are????
Remember how all their customers were informed a year ago that the Canadian CRTC had banned non-Canadian reception of Shaw satellite signals. I guess I was the only one who missed that memo!

Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
I think the CRTC banned it a very long time ago and Shaw was finally forced to comply.
Re: SHAW Satellite - Heads Up
Not so.
We signed up in Jan 2012 and told Shaw we wintered in Mexico and brought their equipment down with us. No Problemo.
I honestly think the a**holes in Ottawa retroactively changed the rules. There must be votes in it somewhere for the Conservative government in power
