Re: Stay in and vote!
Jaja........I just noticed this thread was a voting thing. It is nice to be number two (below Focus on Mexico) however some of the competition I have never even heard of.
Re: Stay in and vote!
We are still number two. If you think FOM is the best web resource ignore this. If you KNOW this board rocks, tells it like it is and is the real source of truth here then start voting! Once every 24 hours.

I tried to go in and see the results and nothing happens, I tried to vote again and of course that didn't work. How do you see the results?

Re: Stay in and vote!
I've heard positive things about Focus from people who used them. I considered it, but felt I could do my own research and get my "tour" from other sources. That worked for us, but I know some people would prefer a more laid-back introduction without putting a lot of thought into it. They have a nice website and I do occasionally refer people to various articles there for reference.
As for being happy... we've been here 2 years now and are still grinning about our decision. Almost every day we look up at the mountains, out across the lake, or around town at any number of reminders about our Mexican surroundings and tell each other we can't believe we actually LIVE here. We've had struggles getting used to our new surroundings and the way we have to deal with certain things. We're still learning how to handle a variety of situations, where to shop for things, what to do and not do... but the wonderful group of expats here provides a life vest to keep us afloat and provide assistance in most things.
Meanwhile, we enjoy the beautiful weather, the friendly people (locals and expats), the great food, the gorgeous scenery, the generally affordable cost of living, the architecture, the culture, the art, the music, all the activity on the streets, and the wonder of living someplace where there's always something new to discover. For us, the positives have far outweighed any negatives.
The ONLY way to tell if YOU will like it here is to research and visit. Look at all aspects of the area from your own perspective. Get feedback and advice - there will be a great variety of it! - but don't let anybody tell you they know what's right for YOU.
The main factor determining whether you will be happy here is your own attitude, and that of your spouse/partner/significant other. You should both be in agreement, because it's definitely a team effort to live in such a different environment and you'll need to support each other when there are frustrations. If you're the type of person who thinks this is just an area with nice weather and scenery, but you're expecting the culture to be like where you came from... stay home. If you can't deal with slow service, a relaxed pace of living, unreliable utilities, and occasional (frequent?) beauracracy... stay home. If you have kids, grandkids, and other family or friends who you visit frequently and think you'll be able to do without seeing them on a regular basis after you move here (no, they won't come down to visit you as much as you'd think)... you'd better think it over. If you plan to bring a vehicle and drive around Lakeside and Guadalajara, but you get nervous in frantic traffic with lots of distractions... consider other options.
If you can roll with the punches, enjoy learning new things, love to explore, and are willing to adjust your way of life to fit with what you'll experience here... then you will probably be happy. Asking other people if they're happy here isn't a good measure of how you will fit in. After all... most of the people here are happy, or they're gone. :)
Enjoy your visit, and maybe we'll run into you when you're here. Talk to lots of people, and do lots of investigating. Be sure to ask about and look for the bad as well as the good, to make sure you're OK with both sides of the coin.

Bumping!
Remember, the category is most valuable web resource. Hands down Inside Lakeside is and deserves the win.

Had anybody, ANYBODY, ever even heard of this poll before this thread was started? Do they do it every year? And if they do, have they been keeping it a secret?

I think your questions are pretty much answered on the site's home page. Judy King did a feature story on this new site 2 or 3 months ago in the GDL Reporter, and there have been ads in the Reporter, the Ojo del Lago, the Chapala Directory, etc., plus color flyers passed around. No secret, just takes awhile for the word to get around, I guess.
