Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
I'm about 50% serious, after hearing some tales about what happens after shooting somebody, you really wouldn't want to go there but sometimes might have to. There is no right answer and depends on circumstances.

The real answer of what I would do is to first call a buddy who used to be a criminal judge here and find ID on the body and tell him what happened and who I killed and then do whatever he told me to do.

I too wouldn't hesitate to pop some low-life who threatened my life by breaking into my home. But, disturbing a homicide crime scene would be unwise and could most likely implicate you in a crime up to and including murder. Why put yourself at risk? The threat of family and/or friends is real, but I'd rather deal with them than spending even a day in a Mexican prison - much less my ENTIRE LIFE (no death penalty in Mexico). The better thing to do in such a situation would be to find somewhere else to live -ASAP!!!

Whether sob, nob or anywhere in the world, don't get a gun unless when the occasion arises you are 100% prepared to use it and well trained to do so.That means target practice, regular cleaning etc.
Remember, if you are not comfortable with firearms and only want one for protection you should not even consider owning one.
This is a very serious issue and you should think about this long and hard.

I have seen too many people with guns that have no idea how to even load it much less use it. I think before anyone buys a firearm they should have to demonstrate the ability to use it safely.

Spencer just be careful if you drive down with guns or amo in your car. When I moved to Mexico my brother in Houston asked me if I had any guns or amo in my car. I've never owned a gun so I asked him why he would even ask. He said he read an article in a Houston newspaper that a NOB got stopped by Mexican customs and his car was searched and they found bullets he had accidentally left in his car from a hunting trip. He was at that time in a Mexican jail.

Don't even think of crossing the border with weapons and/or ammo without the right paperwork.

If I bring my guns down it will be with export permission from the US, import permission from Mexico and everything in order. I don't want to take chances. Later this year I'll take my gun safe to my brother's house and keep most of my guns there.

I was taught - two to the 10 ring and one to the head. Course under fire or the stress of the event, you're lucky to get even one hit.Intercasa wrote:You always shoot to kill, dead men tell no tales.

Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
I think it is the inner ring on a pratice target which would make it an upper body shot.
Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
The silhouette of a target has a series of circles expanding outward from center mass. They vary in "points" with a "bull's eye" (smallest circle in the center of the chest) counting for 10 "points" (the 10 ring). Targets used by police to practice and monthly qualification use a human silhouette as oppose to just a series of circles. We aim to please - pun intended.Rolly wrote:What is "10 ring?"

Oh, and Spencer - the more "correct" term is shoot to STOP. Use your imagination!

Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
I take it the operative expression is "had to"?
Maiming someone in the manner you describe would leave one open to things much worse! In addition to worrying about the family's (and perpetrator's) retribution, one would then have to wonder if the Mexican judicial system might follow the example of the U.S., where lawsuits have been brought against those who did something similar -- and the "victim" (read: perpetrator) won!!!
(Besides, a gun wouldn't be necessary in that case; a baseball bat does the job, too. Same word of caution: It can be taken away and used against you.)
It all depends on how comfortable you are with killing someone, that was offered as an alternative. Let say you crushed their kneecaps with a bat. Does it make any difference? Busted knee caps are busted kneecaps!
The perps chances are 99.9% when they break in my home that they will die! They will be "graveyard dead' when I shoot them. If and when I have to defend my life and property within the confines of the Mexican gun laws.
I f you decide to get a gun you better be prepared to take a human life and be able to live with the consequences!
Do you feel lucky?

I've heard the store in DF or a gun club.

Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
Ammo is available in stores that sell hunting stuff, basically they have everything except firearms. I've been to a store in Guadalajara, there are others, and I'm pretty sure there's one in Jocotepec too. Gun Clubs do not sell ammo.

Re: Hypothetical question on gun ownership in Mex
Do you have to show your gun permit to buy ammo? I read somewhere that one can only buy ammo for the type of gun he owns. True?
