New car tires
We need to replace 2 tires. Any recommendations for a lakeside vendor who sells/installs/balances? Thanks!

Out on the Libramiento on the mountain side there is a tire store. They have good selection and do excellent work.

Re: New car tires
FYI - always check the date code of any tires you purchase. See here: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11
Date code should not be more than 12 months old, preferably 6. More important here in Mexico as tires are not likely stored in climate controlled environments.

Re: New car tires
I bought Brazil made Goodyear Tires but did not buy Mexican made tires. After driving on
a new March with Mexican made tires I spent the extra money for nothing. They are fine.
Unless you drive a lot the tires will sun rot before they wear out here even on the cobbles.

Re: New car tires
I should say that in Canada (B.C. at least) you have to buy 4 matching tires. The tire store will not, can not, sell just two. Unmatching tires can make the wheel alignment and braking irregular. Also tires have to be "rotated" - moved on the car to get maximum life and tread. This is a problem in winter, when many people only want two traction tires for the snow. Not that Canada is the world leader in tire technology or safety - just saying.

Re: New car tires
Are you sure about that? No sign of it in the BC regs, they only get as specific as not mixing radial and bias ply tires on vehicles with 4 wheels:

Re: New car tires
It's the policy at the major tire stores - I don't think anyone has been to court over it. I think the tire store on Libramento has a sign "4 for price of 3 special".

Re: New car tires
I have bought one tire, or two tires, as needed, in Colorado forever. Maybe a scam to sell more tires???

Re: New car tires
What's funny is I was buying a set of V rated tires ($$$) and the tire store said I had to buy a full set or the manufacturer wouldn't honor the warranty (as if the matter was out of his hands). Then I mentioned that if one tire was defective, after 25,000 kms lets say, would the manufacturer pay for a whole new set? He kind of mumbled and really didn't answer the question. I laughed.

The Dealer wuz Fulla Shit.... were it true... I'd look to a more user friendly manufacturer...
90% of todays tires are steel belted, they rotate front to back only... not diagonally... as they are directional.... With normal wear, you might replace in pairs...always keep the best pair in front

Re: New car tires
Logic says that I would agree with you especially on a vehicle with front wheel drive! This position being taken by tire manufacturers is a fairly new development and totally disregards whether the drive is front or rear.

just tugg'n yer nuts
It depends on environment... In wintery Canada.... definitely Front....
Soggy Great Lake Region.... probable Back...
And I have always avoided Front Wheel Drive ... hate the way they drive!!

Re: New car tires
I wasn't aware of this new development until just last Thursday when Discount Tire said that they would only put new tires on the rear of this particular front wheel drive vehicle. Wonder what they will do for a tire rotation since the tires are directional? Here in NM, we don't much have to worry about being "snowy" or "soggy".
