Killer weather
It's going to be bad here tonight. People in the MidSouth just aren't prepared for subzero temps. Sure do wish we were someplace SOB!! Can't even imagine what the folks in the NE are dealing with.

All our small fur kids are snug inside...mostly sleeping with us. The horses all have shelter...but this is some crazy cold weather. Colder than anything I can remember....well... when I was singing in Regina Saskatchewan..about a hundred years ago... it was colder... but they expected it there.

Its only 20 here real feel with 20-30 mph wind gusts real feel 8. I have a raging fire going in the fireplace. I have heaters on for the chickens. The goats are bedded down somewhere. Couple years ago it was this cold. Funny thing is Saturday it was 72 degrees and Wednesday it is sposed to be 60 something.

Just found out ERCOT is in stage 2. That means people need to limit power consumption or there will be rolling black outs! Thank god I have plenty of fire wood!

Re: Killer weather
I don't know how cold it got last night..but it's 15 right now. With the wood stove..electric fireplaces and forced air...we stayed warm...especially with all of the fuzzy bed warmers. The nice thing is they go to bed first so by the time we go to bed.... everything is warm!!!
Hal cracked the hose at the barn last night.... but it wasn't enough to keep it from freezing. Really pretty ice sculpture cascading off of the end...but not a chance of it thawing. I rearranged horses so that everyone has water. The horses in pasture have a shelter but their secondary water is the pond. Fortunately they're smart enough to break the ice. I'll have to go down and find another hose that's empty after I warm up a tad. It's just not enough to leave the nozzle on a little when it's this cold. We have to drain it completely. Oh the fun.
Memphis was prowling the streets last night handing out blankets, coats, gloves and warm socks to the street people. They advertised all of the places that they could come in to sleep in the warmth...but I wonder how many have access to a TV? I'm sure they missed a lot of them... This kind of cold is so deadly. It's misleading today...gorgeous bright sunshine along with the 15 degrees.
Espiritu, where are you located?
Kip... freezing my toes off is Mississippi.

Re: Killer weather
Isn't it the pits when our temps are colder than Anchorage!!!
There are some things I COULD be doing..out in the bright sunshine... but I'm not going to!! Think I'll clean my "untidy" ...(and that's putting it mildly) house and make some bread. I make a knock off of the Outback Steak House Bushman bread that's KILLER!!!! Somehow "warm" things just seem so much more appealing right now.

Re: Killer weather
It's official. It was 17 degrees today...the coldest this area has ever recorded. I can't vouch for that...but... I just came up from the barn and my hands are screaming.

I keep in touch with family & friends in Regina... it has been -30C .... -50C with windchill for about 8 days now.... just starting to warm up today... next week should be just below freezing, which is good for this time of the year....
Hope you & yours fared well in The Little Blast From The North!!

Re: Killer weather
While it is the hot topic to discuss the current extreme cold weather to be found in certain areas and then complain about it being too hot during the summer - these are conditions which we have the technology and equipment to control in our own personal environment. When I see photos like the one below of the storms being experienced in the UK, one realizes just how helpless we can be:

The same could be said for tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, typhoons, earthquakes, etc!

Re: Killer weather
We are very lucky to not have those types of weather disasters in this part of Mexico. Other than the odd earthquake it seems pretty quiet around here.
Re: Killer weather
May be true but I have read recent complaints about temps inside of people's homes (being the same as outside or colder) being an unfair hardship and similar ones during the hot/dry season. But we do have technology available to solve these problems.

Re: Killer weather
We still are lucky.
I am getting reports from friends all over the U.S. and one in Canada. It is scary cold--even in the south. I will use a space heater and wear a jacket indoors any day compared to what they are going through. All it would take was a power failure and people could start dying.

Yes, scary indeed. I have made a new rule to never live in a place where you can die in short order from exposure, whether it be heat or cold.
Re: Killer weather
That is a good rule, CBob!
