Was talking to someone this last week and they mentioned there are local places that will cook your turkey for you. Anyone know who these people are? Thank you in advance.

Maybe Rojas Bakery on Juarez in Ajijic. One block north of the Carretera...west side of the street. They've done it for large groups.

Bubba's used to cook turkeys. They weren't great, but easier than cooking the darn thing yourself. Don't know about the new owner.

Uhhh.....there is nothing hard about cooking a turkey. It would take longer to drive to Bubba's and back than it would to prepare the bird to chuck in the oven....LOL.

Well, you do have to have an oven, and you have to be able to turn on the gas and light the oven without singeing your eyebrows (altho that can be part of the Thanksgiving tradition, but only if you like to paint your eyebrows on). If you do not have a spouse or significant other to hold the pitcher of water to fling at you, this could be a problem resulting in you being cooked and the turkey, not.

So I do think there is an opportunity for the catering-inclined to deliver cooked turkeys at Lakeside. The important thing about having your own turkey, as opposed to going out for dinner, is that you have LEFTOVERS. This is the most important aspect of cooking your own turkey as opposed to going to a restaurant or a friend's or relative's house. Of course, if you have a mother (another thread), mothers cheerfully give leftovers. This is the difference between having a mother who cooks and having mere friends who invite you over because they like your mashed potatoes.

The good thing about cooking a turkeyyourself is that you can get OTHER PEOPLE to bring the sides. Altho you do have to fix the gravy, which is always iffy, especially if you are talking, drinking and trying to make the gravy at the same time!

Of course, you do have to supply the wine, but others will bring bottles, admittedly perhaps not great vintage but you can give them to people who invite you for dinner because you invited them for Thanksgiving.

WAIT A MINUTE! I think I have just talked myself into having a Thanksgiving dinner at my house. And I promised myself I was not doing this again this year--OH WELL!

To my way of thinking and experience, the turkey seems to be the easiest part and the least amount of prep. It is all of the sides that make the biggest mess and require the most prep work. There are so many virtually foolproof turkey recipes that it is crazy! Forget the infused or pre injected turkeys and work with the real thing!

I should have mentioned, for those who are new here, that the chicken store in Riberas is a good source of turkeys--you specify what size you want and pick the turkey up prior to Thanksgiving.

The only tricky thing is the stuffing. From to die for to just OK to .... almost ruining the meal

Just because one CAN cook a turkey does not mean one WANTS to cook a turkey. I figure I have cooked around 100 turkeys in my life. I really have no desire to do it anymore. However, I still enjoy making side dishes when I have nothing else to worry about.

Splashingcolor:

Unless I am missing something, I don't think anyone inferred or even suggested that you couldn't cook a turkey?

There are times when life deals you the cards that dictate you want to cook a holiday dinner and go through the challenge and others when you want nothing to do with the process. Either way, it is a personal decision and nothing is wrong with either choice!

Thank you, Lady Otter.

CheenaGringo, everyone gave an opinion without answering the question.  I'll ask Puritan Poultry if they know who locally can cook one.  I did order one from them already.

I can and have cooked many turkeys.  I may end up doing it again this year.  I just wanted to take that layer off the table, so to speak to free up my oven and time with fun thinks to make, like everyone's favorite pie!  Very Happy

So true! And that is one of the reasons we are not following the turkey tradition for Thanksgiving - pork crown roast for a change of pace!

I must admit I have cooked more really bad turkeys than most. Maybe I am the only one who can screw up cooking really large objects in an oven with uncertain temperatures.

Flamingo:
You can blame it on the altitudes in Colorado! The altitude only works well for elk, venison and Rocky Mountain Trout.

Oh Flamingo, you have hit upon one of the reasons I have no desire to cook turkey--or anything that goes in an oven down here. Between the altitude and the oven with obscure numbers (or none!) for temperatures, it is way more challenge than I enjoy.
Yes, Splashing, if you are hosting the dinner and have to prepare for guests, worrying about how a turkey may turn out AND have the oven being used up until just before dinner is served is an added layer of stress. Besides, I always thought the "other stuff" was more fun and creative.
Cheena, crown pork roast is a great (and delicious) idea.

Bump
I know they cooked turkeys for the Anglican Church harvest dinners for several years...don't know about one turkey.
Also Cbob seems to be hinting strongly that he is for hire.  Very Happy
