Local group that makes clothing and items for newborns needs help
Eight years ago a group of us living at Lakeside began contributing to a program to deliver baby clothing to needy newborns. We make up packages consisting of a receiving blanket, two cloth diapers, two disposable diapers, a sleeper, cap and socks for the newborn. For mom we include two sanitary napkins, a pair of panties, and a pair of socks. When the mom is admitted to the hospital or clinic a family member must take home all her belongings and she is left with nothing more than a hospital gown. Rather rustic medical care but we see improvements all the time. We have seen babies going home in newspaper since they did not have anything for their babies.
At this time we supply packages to all the free clinics in the area DIF, IMSS and Seguro Popular. They have rules about handing out the packages also, they must make and keep their appts. to see the Dr.'s and have a blood test prior to receiving a package, so there is control here and it helps keep Mom and baby healthier.
Every three months we have a potluck luncheon at one of our members' homes and we bring all the packages we've made with us. All our donations go directly to the moms and babies.
You should see how anxious the mothers are to get their babies dressed. If the delivery is free of problems, the baby is wrapped in a sheet and sent back to mom's bed with her. Naturally, mom is thrilled to see the pretty pastel clothing, blanket, and diapers. Many of the Mom's do not make it to the hospital and have their babies at the clinics and even Cruz Rojas, so we are working on keeping all these facilities stocked to keep up with the demand.
We also need to spread the word that we need more people to join us to help this group to continue - pot luck meeting is the first Wed. of the month. Two members of the group were recently lost to terminal illnesses. So if you have any donations, for newborns, we can use baby socks, booties, blankets, sleep caps, diapers, diaper pins or materials to knit or sew the baby items (remember they need to be for newborns. Even money donations toward supplies are appreciated.
If you are interested in joining the group for the monthly pot luck or donating any items or materials please contact Julie at: julieywayne(at)yahoo.com - substitute @ for (at) or call her at 765-4590.

I forgot to add that we sometimes include mini soaps, shampoos and lotions to mom in the package. So if you are traveling and have extras please save them for us.

Actually, the travel/hotel size soaps, lotions, shampoos and conditioners we put into separate packages for moms who have lost their babies. We also give these packages out as needed to the elderly or sick.simpsca wrote:I forgot to add that we sometimes include mini soaps, shampoos and lotions to mom in the package. If anyone is traveling or has a stash of these mini items, they can contact me at hairbysasha@me.com for a list of items we need for these packages.
