Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
I have Telmex for my Internet connection in upper Chula Vista. It is extremely unreliable and slow. Does anyone else have this problem, or is it just me?

Paying for 5 mps getting under 2 mps (when it is rarely working). On again / off again. Must be a solution that doesn't require a move. Any other Upper Chula Vista Telmex customers out there?

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
It all depends upon how close you are to your DSlam card. (where your telephone line connects you to the internet); (over simplified explanation) and what your speed settings are, which you can see by entering your modem.
I pay $599 per month, and am about 1100 meters from my DSlam card. My settings in my modem are " Ancho de banda (ascendente/descendente) [kbps/kbps]: 764 / 6.013"
What speeds am I getting for my $599? pretty close to what I expect for these settings, about 85% thereof:
Often the problem is that your speed settings which are shown in your modem are too slow. So naturally your speed will suck.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
Hi Mexico Pete
Thanks for the DSL info. I don't expect to get the advertised speeds. My problem has more to do with the loss of signal altogether. It's down most of the time and there is a lot of noise on the phone line. Don't know if it's just me or others in the Fracc. Would like to hear from other Chula Vista folks to compare. I don't think there are other hi-speed options here. Kinda stuck with Telmex and their modems pretty much suck. I wish I could get close to what you are getting, but I think you are in Ajijic.

Down near modelorama in Ch. Vista, paying for 5, getting 5. In my experience, all TelMex Internet problems can be fixed. There may be issues with your modem or computer, or with the lines coming in. TelMex service guys are extremely good at figuring out the problems, in most cases.
In Riberas near Mom's Deli, paying for 5, getting 5.

Thanks Helper Guy
I'm hopeful they can fix it. Even if I am at the extreme end of DSL line, I can live with 2. It's the 'off and on' thing that's driving me nuts! I'll keep pestering them. I just wish I could use my own modem instead to the cheepo ones they foist on us.

Dropping out has again become a noticeable problem in Riberas the last couple of weeks. I have not contacted them yet to see what's what.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
Trying to run an internet business is a real challenge, and there appears to be no other alternative to Telmex. I'm constantly running down to Black Coffee to send/get files and email. Wheew, what a pain.

Have you called the 01-800-123-2222 line for Infinitum help, in Mexico City? That's the first step. I send god-awful amounts of email, and very large PhotoShop files frequently, as well as downloading program files.

Yep. I talk with them almost daily. Very good English speaking tech support, but the problem has (so far) eluded them. I really think it's an Upper Chula Vista thing. There's always tomorrow :)

I have a few customers up there without similar problems. First off, I'm surprised they haven't sent anyone out to physically check.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
A fellow did come by today, checked the line and said 2 mps was the max I could expect. He then swapped the modem with a crappy huawei wi-fi modem and left. A half hour later it was out completely. Was sporatic all afternoon. Tonight it seems pretty good. Tomorrow ... who knows. Patience and courage!

He actually said that? Sounds like a cop-out to me. Considering others in the area are not suffering. Perhaps the old "call and get someone different" routine...

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
Let's see how it goes. Right now I'm getting around 1.5 consistently. All night (in fact). If it goes south, I'll call them again. I think they will eventually sort it out. As long as I know that my neighbors are OK I have hope. Panic delayed :)

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
It is the same in Chapala Haciendas and Brisas. Stunning views, peaceful serenity, amazing animals/birds/butterflies - but crappy internet. Eventually Telmex in DF will tell you the truth - there is simply not enough bandwidth on or to the servers, they get overloaded. Apparently, the proper upgrade is a fiber optic link, but who knows when that is going to happen. They say August/September (but didn't say what year!). Another resident of Upper Chula Vista told me last week the internet was bad there.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
That's my fear. Good infrastructure takes time (and money). I do miss my NOB 20 mps. I thought that DSL was ancient history. I need to adjust my expectations.

It has been cranky everywhere for the last month or two. I am guessing a lack of
bandwidth going north. We also have our local problems with Telmex Servers of which
many are overloaded.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
I think a static IP address would be better, the technicians say no. It is an expensive experiment, just an upgrade to a 'business' internet account is $1,000 pesos per month. My theory is that the "DNS" servers, that give random IP addresses, are overloaded, but there is a better chance that a Telmex static address would be higher quality. I think!
I ran Namebench again, and it is recommending some different addresses for my secondary and tertiary settings. Here is how to change them, if this article sounds like it is written in Outer Mongolian, get a technician like helper guy to run it for you.

I am cynical I see my connection potentially getting worse when a worker is up in the wires LOL. I do admit I have had my Telecable physical cable stolen outside my house before. That's what I get for using a good new wire.

Re: Terrible Internet speed in upper Chula vista
Update: The internet connection has been stable for over a week now. I think the work the technician did at the pole corrected the instability.
Still piss-poor slow. Dreaming for fiber optic.
