Android Apps for Samsung Galaxy Smartphones???
Now that we have decided to take a giant leap forward by getting Samsung smartphones, I am wondering which apps people have found the most useful in Mexico for:
a) WIFI phone calls to get around expensive charges from the carriers - especially Mexico to the US
b) translation tools
c) don't think we are interested in GPS since we have our Garmin but will listen to reasons
d) any other recommendations

(see bottom for links to apps)
Free app, Free US or C area code / phone #, Free calls to all US & C #'s. Works great.
You can install their app on just about any smartphone or tablet, they have it for Apple, Android, and BlackBerry.

Google Translate works well for me. Here are some of the features:
Input text with the virtual keyboard or you can dictate a phrase in English that you would like to have translated. Or you can enter Spanish and have it translated into English.
You can play back your results so you can hear how to pronounce it.
You can also take a picture of a sign in a foreign language , like Spanish, and it will automatically translate that into the language that you choose, like English .
You can play back your results so someone can hear what you translated or if the person you are trying to communicate with can read you could show a printed version of your results.
You can save a history of the translations that you have so that on another occasion you can pull up favorite phrases.
Google Translate works with many different languages.
After you get your smartphone you should use the included Google Play app to download other apps that you may be interested in. Many are free. Google Play has over 600,000 applications that you may want to try. You can also download apps that are not approved by Google Play from other locations.
There are many websites that you can find out about using Google that are interested in android phones and applications. You should go to them for recommendations on applications.
Good luck with your new Samsung smartphones.

You might check out Google voice.
I signed up here in Alaska, with the mindset of having a USA telephone number, they didn't have an Alaska number, so I have a Colorado number.
This SHOULD work from Mexico, as it uses a connection to the internet, either wifi or wired.Fairly inexpensive voice calls to Mexico thus far, and the connection was fair to good.

Thanks for the recommendations so far. From my research, each suggestion appears to be viable but as can be expected, there are varying reviews on each.
Go Solar: I couldn't get your link to work but was able to track down the app via Google Play. I believe the app is called ePhone?
