Re: Romantic songs
Sorry I typoed the last post. It should read: "Vamos a gozar esta pompa negra." I think it means: "Let's go enjoy this black ass." However, if you have a different translation, I'm open to new interpretations of the song.

Joan Baez is simply elegant and Bob Dylan is...well...Bob Dylan.

Glad we cleared that up...but maybe I still prefer my interpretation.

Re: Romantic songs
So what happened to the rest of yous? I thought we had some Billie Holiday fans out there. I could certainly handle more from Ella. The Argentine guy and his squeezebox blew me away. Even miss the elevator music...though not that much.

Sexiest, most romantic bolero ever written: Sabor a Mi.

Re: Romantic songs
Whatsyername,
I know this song by Los Lobos. Never realized it was a bolero. Can you tell me what makes it a bolero and something different from all the other romantic songs in Spanish?

I mean to say: As a genre of music, what makes a bolero distinct from other music?

Here's some Latin American music history:

And here's another group of boleros by none other than Los Panchos:

Re: Romantic songs
Thoroughly enjoyed Los Panchos. Very romantic. Thank you for that. However, I just don't see that the music has much, if anything, in common with Ravel's Bolero. Haven't listened to Ravel's Bolero for quite some time, however, I really don't remember it having a whole lot of guitars, bongo drums, maracas...or vocals. I always thought of it as military marching music.

Re: Romantic songs
Did you read the article in the first link? Latin boleros have absolutely nothing to do with Ravel's greatest hit.
Here is a mix of boleros and other songs by José Alfredo Jiménez, arguably Mexico's greatest songwriter. Sr. Jiménez never learned to read music and never played an instrument, but many of Mexico's standards are his compositions. He was a great pal and drinking buddy to Chavela Várgas, back in the day. He's buried in Dolores Hidalgo and it's worth the trip just to pay a visit to his grave.
