Didn't read your links, but I saw some article on-line recently that said they were expecting a big explosion in the US this year, somewhere in the east, I think. The article about the phenomenon took on a very excited tone. Like a comet that only shows up every so often.
It's every year here. Or has been for the last five while we've been living in this area. Maybe there's just more of everything in Mexico.

I have not heard a single rainbird croak this year yet! I'm taking you guys to the bank on the first rain dates. It's never too early for me.

Complete sandbagging is that. Very popular date.
If there's going to be a contest/pool, it has to be very specific. What constitutes a real "rain" (inches or centimeters by measure, whatever). You'll also have to pinpoint a deadline on the clock. As in, "I predict we will have received x amount before x o'clock on x calendar day.
No rainbirds yet where we live, but I'm optimistic the rains will arrive early! Can't wait!

From the Newark Star Ledger:
The sound of summer is coming.
One of the largest broods of cicadas is expected to hatch in the coming weeks for the first time in 17 years, and it won’t be long before the bug’s distinct chirp inundates New Jersey. The coming hatch has entomologists giddy, while others recoil in disgust.

Re: Rainbirds
Rain typically commences the 2nd week of June. Rainbirds will be howling by May 1st, mas o menos.

We haven't heard any in the village yet. While I understand the area needs rain, I hate it. If I never saw rain again it would be too soon.......jaja.

They don't ALL hatch at the same time. Every year a new 17 year cycle starts.

Re: Rainbirds
We do not have rainbirds in San Cristobal de Las Casas at 7,000 feet but we do have a very early rainy season this year which started with typical violent tropical inundations about a week ago in about mid April when normally the season starts in mid May. This is a definite and clear change in the weather patterns in the highlands where heavy rain normally occurs in mid afternoon and lasts for up to a couple of hours. If this is a precursor of what we can expect this summer at Lakeside then batten down the hatches. Maybe it is time to head north before the mountain passes start closing as often happens down here if heavy rains occur. By the way, they have had a couple of (for Chiapas) pretty dry years and so a heavy rainy season this year would not be unexpected. The burning season seems to have started early and local farmers are the first to sense the coming of the rains.
In 2003, Lake Chapala recovered from very low water levels during that heavy rainy season that caused major flooding in the Lerma Basin and the heavy rains came primarily in September. Maybe Tlaloc will rescue us again. Call the Huicholes and the Virgin for a repeat rain ceremony as they performed in 2003.

By the time the rains come here, you'll be dancing in the street to welcome them.
That's for you frozen tundra folks who haven't lived here long.
Besides, it only rains at night in Camelot.

Folks from places such as Vancouver and Seattlle learn over time to hate rain which is really drizzle (or chipi chipi) from whence they come. In the Dawg hometown of Mobile it actually rains more inches per year than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. including Seattle and Portland but the rain comes in tropical short lived outbursts rather than incessant and maddening sprinkles as experienced in the dreaded Pacific Northwest.
When we lived in San Francisco I found myself often assigned to work in Western Oregon and Washington states and my Northwestern colleagues living in that God forsaken region used to ask me if I were going to contribute to the Californification of those dismal places by retiring there when the time came. I assured them that my ass was heading south toward Mexico and they could rest at ease. Now I find these Northwestern mildew suckers crowding out my Mexico with their presence. They are always welcome and I am glad they have seen the light.
Dawg does, however look forward to the start of the Lake Chapala rainy season which is real rain rather than wet endless fog. Thank you Jesus.

13/5/13. Approximately @ 3:13 pm on Botella de Puebla dia. My second best guess is 5/15/13 on Dia del Maestro.

Oh yeah. I know what you mean. I have moved to straight baby oil--just slather it on my skin several times a day

Re: Rainbirds
We have Rainbirds starting in March in Chapala Haciendas but they have been out in earnest for the last week or so. According to Jeanne's column in the Reporter, the Rainbirds are early and the rain will start at the end of May. Sure hope she's right!!
