EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION
New twist by acquaintance! He claims he terminates his house keeper after 28 days and rehires her with signed letter, thereby avoiding termination costs! Probably question for Rolly or Spencer?

Could you make that "some clever, cheap, wiseass, inconsiderate gringo"? Loyalty and respect are a two way street.

That's correct Seis, you would know about those laws having lived in Mexico so long.
When will you listen to the news that he had "permission" to bring the gun with him by American AND Mexican authorities.

Jim....The way I understood the episode is that his firearm was legal in the US and THEN he tried to bring it across the border without getting the proper Mexican permits BEFORE crossing. You just can't run up to Mexican Aduana with a firearm and then tell the boys there "where do I get a permit". That's either being stupid or thinking you are entitled because you are an American and what's legal on one side should be legal on the other.Maybe just because you are an American. Don't know what he was thinking but he was way off base in either case.
I didn't understand your relating this firearm incic¡dent to "tourist dollars"...as how many tourists try bringing in weapons of that nature. The law is the law, whether he is an US Marine or not. I got the impression that you thought he was falsely apprehended. You may know more than me.

Slainte, I've got this way off thread. My understanding was he was arrested at the border, trying to bring it into Mexico....thinking he was legal.

Re: EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION
After first seeing this story a few days ago and then watching the US media hype and distort the facts, I wondered if the story would appear here. From my perspective:
1) The fact that he is an ex Marine and suffers from PTSD have no bearing in this story. Simply put - he is a US Citizen just like many of us who cross the border into Mexico and subject to the same rules and regulations.
2) The "registration" process which he went through on the US side was to insure that he could return to the US with a shotgun that had been properly inspected and recorded on exit from the US.
3) An unknown is whether or not something was stated or inferred on the US side that the document was what he needed for proper importation into Mexico.
4) The media and some politicians are playing on emotions by expecting that the legal system and process in Mexico is comparible to that in the US.
5) He may be experiencing additional issues since he was arrested in Tamaulipas?
6) Do I think the Mexican authorities are dragging their feet? Certainly but this isn't unusual in the Mexican legal system!

Re: EMPLOYEE COMPENSATION
If some stupid idiot pulls crap like that on his employees, sooner or later they will get even, one way or another. Usually by stealing. In this case I wouldn't hold it against them either. The guy is not only an idiot he's pretty close to brain dead.
We have had our housekeeper for 10 years. She is bar none the best in this area. We treat her well, she treats us well. It's a mutual respect thing. Our new gardener has been here over a year. He too is a great guy. We're hoping he'll be with us for the next 10 years or longer.
We pay them when they're sick. they get a months bonus at Christmas. Plus gifts. So, everybody is happy. I do not like discord in my house, and I don't get it because everyone knows what is expected.

We treat our help the same. If you can afford it why not. It is the decent thing to do in my opinion.
