share shaw tv account
Moving to an area that does not have telecable - a friend suggesting sharing a shaw tv account with someone - anyone out there? I also don't have a dish or receiver

Re: share shaw tv account
I'd suggest that you contact one of the local service providers, Linfoot, Satellite Systems of Ajijic, etc. and arrange your own service. Any savings to someone who has a legal connection, would not, in my opinion, offset the risk of loss of service by pirating the signal for you.

Cosalamx is correct. CP electronics in Guad can set you up too. I use Ed Linfoot but others get good service from CP. Get your own account, billed to your credit card and you'll have no trouble.

Re: share shaw tv account
It is my understanding that sharing is not pirating. Each customer can have 5-6 units, is that not correct?

Yes, each subscriber may have 5 receivers. Each HD TV needs it's own receiver. However, "sharing" your account with another household is not allowed.

Re: share shaw tv account
I think the rule of thumb here would be: If it's under the same roof it's probably OK but if your stringing a cable across the street to your amigo's casa then it's probably stealing.......
Re: share shaw tv account
Some folks here who do this aren't even neighbors which is defintely not OK.

Can you get what we call the big 4 American network TV channels?
Fox, NBC. ABC and CBS

Yes, and you get both the East and West coast feeds, in HD too.

I can veryify only Shaw but I'm pretty sure the US Direct and Dish provide networks although probably not East and West.

Re: share shaw tv account
Many of us dumped Dish when they realigned their sat. last year requiring a larger dish-receiver. I went with Shaw & would never go back...In addition to the U.S. channels, they have some great programing on the Canadian stations. We use the Detroit & Spokane feeds, so if you miss your show on one, you can catch it on the other. BTW, if you are up to here with political crap, do subscribe to BBC World for the the unvarnished truth.

Re: share shaw tv account
Good chance we are going to lose 100% of our HD signals from Shaw Direct when their new bird gets turned on late 2012. First they are moving the channels to mpeg4 compression which means one of the newer 600 series receivers. Moot point however as the new satellite footprint looks like it will be too far north to receive.
Re: share shaw tv account
Wow....that sucks. I can live without the HD but wouldn't want to give up my hockey on the regular channels. Hopefully they don't change that......
Re: share shaw tv account
I can't live without HD so I'm wondering what to do instead.
Telsat has already published the signal foot print and I can't see it changing. Remember Shaw has actually been turning a blind eye on subscribers south Cdn border. The footprint cuts Oregon in half and heads east in a straight line.
By the sounds of it you will continue to receive all the programing you now get on Standard Def. channels. This is until one of the old birds needs to be replaced. I can't remember the exact dates of replacement but it is years down the road. While we will never know until it has happened it sounds like having one of the new 600 series receivers will be a waste of money. If a person already has one it will continue to receive the old signals just fine. Shaws PVR630 is so buggy that I would hate to own one this far from Canada. Lots of stories of people on their 3rd and 4th box.

Re: share shaw tv account
I was planning on bringing a new unsubscribed box down. Looks like I could get the cheaper non HD one however I want PVR and I think all the PVR models have HD capability.
Re: share shaw tv account
I'm using a PVR 530 which when through the hassles of a warranty replacement a year ago. (they are buggy too) Shaw doesn't have any non HD PVR's at all. The one thing is that any PVR that you bring down will get HD until the change over. And you will still have a PVR to record standard def.
Re: share shaw tv account
One thought.... If it was me, and knowing about the problems with Shaw PVR equipment, I would activate it in Canada, after which you could suspend your account until you get it down here. You wouldn't have to mount the dish, just head for a friends place and hook up to his Shaw dish. Also make sure you are bringing the 75E dish down and not what they normally sell.
Re: share shaw tv account
I was planning on getting the dish down at the lake. Too big for carry on. To activate the box up here I suppose I will need a dish to hook it up to so it can download the activation items........
Re: share shaw tv account
All you need is a friend with an account. Just change the cables over to your box and give Shaw a call to get it going. Also a good idea to leave it on for a night or until it upgrades the software. There is a way to force it so it could be done in a couple of hours. I'd have to look up the instructions for that. Might also be a good idea to check prices down here for the dish. Remember you can get one for free in Canada which goes a long way towards the shipping if you don't have room.
Re: share shaw tv account
Pete's assessment isn't that dire. We'll wait and see and deal with it then. The changes are a year away. If you want to avoid the rush, you could worry now.

Is the PVR unit the one that gets rid of the commercials?

Re: share shaw tv account
Here are the two links from a different thread about this. The first is from Telesat showing the footprints of G1. Shaw Direct will be using the extended KU Band and as you can see it doesn't go too far into the US at all. The second link if from Digitalhome.ca and is a thread exactly on our problem.

I don't have the old satellite footprints handy but this new bird is much further north than anything else from Shaw. Yes it is true that we will truly need to do a wait and see. Hopefully there will be enough signal bleed that a large offset dish might work for us down here.

Re: share shaw tv account
Apparently because of some satellite changes for Direct TV it is now a usable system with a 2.4M dish. But thats about all I know.
Another area I haven't looked into, mainly because of my own internet problems is "Internet TV"
