CanuckBob wrote:One of the best "personal protection" devices I have seen lately is some guy selling paint ball guns with rubber balls. These babies can hold and fire several hundred rounds with a proper air tank and ammo hopper. While not normally lethal I can assure you the perp won't be sticking around when you put a few at his head. It will feel like a ball peen hammer. The regular bursting paintballs leave a very nasty welt so I can only imagine what the hard rubber balls will do. They are also very quiet and accurate.
That would be a good idea, if in fact it is legal. It would be of no use if the guy had a firearm.

Oh it is legal and it will be just as useful. Since it has a long barrel it is way more accurate than a handgun. Most people couldn't hit anything with a handgun more than 10 feet away.

Just a quick question here C.B. what does the wife say after you've ruined the brand new decor just finished by the decorators. Might not death by robbers be a preferable fate?

Re: Burglaries in Las Salvias and Rancho Del Oro
Wasp spray has a range of over 20 feet, much better than using pepper spray which requires you to get closer to the perp.
I agree with Zed, that living in a mixed gringo/Mexican neighborhood makes you less of a target. And, as every thief knows, why bother with modest neighborhoods when you can hit RCLUB, Las Salvias, La Floresta or Chula Vista for a much more likely good haul?
And then, there are the folks that think living behind bars is terrible. Like a prison. The difference, of course (says she with the bars everywhere) is that these bars are to keep people OUT, not lock the residents IN.
So far, so good. Never been robbed in our house. Fingers crossed.

Most thieves, break-in artists, hold up criminals, here, are not serial or mass murderers like they have NOB.
What E-raq describes is anecdotal evidence of a successful gun battle that could have went the other way (bad), just as easy.
I think what most of you are missing here is kids or adults hopped up on Crystal Meth. That is far more dangerous than you could even imagine.
Yes, this is anecdotal evidence, however it was successful and the couple were protecting themselves and their dogs rather than baubles. Those kids went in set to kill and tried it. Unusual but on drugs anything can and does happen. Be prepared.

Neither had we in 13 years. We have the bars as well. Luckily our guard dog scared the crap outta them and they fled, leaving behind one of their weapons. Yes, they too were armed. Maybe they were the same ones that hit the other couple's house, we just don't know.

You're correct about the Crystal Meth stuff. So sad that kids would try that s.... Unfortunately drugs are very bad in SJC and Joco, not as bad in Ajijic. Dunno why?

if the guards are armed they can protect THEMSELVES. its an extra assurance. (anyway they dont have breakins or robberies where i lived all my life. no one i know has ever been robbed in their home. but you could be followed on the street). i wonder w/the gated developments, are the guards paying attention to who is coming in & out? are all the openings sealed? i heard the RC has may places for entry. do guards have phones to call police? are there cameras?

Keep laughing as you try to break in my neighbors house and he tasers you in the chest, then in your privates. Loads another cartridge and puts you out of commission. I'd say damn effective.
Mother in law "lethal and effective" against what? Certainly you are joking?

Our gated Community has one road in and one road out with a high gate and electronic operation for the owner. Guests must buzz homeowners on the intercom. We know pretty much every contractor and their truck that drives in/out.

Don't fool yourself in thinking they are mostly inside jobs, not true this time of year. Not here or anywhere else as break ins seem to be a global problem. When we were robbed in the village it was asked of us about our maid...we had none, no workers, just careless at the moment and paid a hefty price. What little earthly treasures I had, some had only sentimental value, are only a memory.
My parents were rudely awakened recently to an intruder who dropped down from a crawl space in the attic into their linen closet...in my hometown, in the USA. Home invasions are happening in my hometown, unheard of before! Fortunately in their case, the intruder didn't think anyone was home and ran off when asked what he was doing? Had my parents had a yappy dog, they would have at least been awakened of a problem before intruder rummaged through an unlocked outdoor storage closet and used their step ladder to boost themselves up. I feel safer here in my home with our deterrents. My parents don't want a dog...a dog would have alarmed them while sleeping that someone was there. Motion detector flood lights or dusk to dawn LED flood lights would have been great!
A dog will alarm YOU of an intruder while YOU are home. May keep them away but from what's been happening recently, no matter if they are big, small or a few small yappy dogs, if the dogs don't have a reputation, friendly, intruders enter yards while homeowners and renters are away during daylight hours and break in. Not enough of a deterrent to just own any dog. They are alarmists for you when are home unless you know how your dog is going to respond, don't count on them as your only home security system. It's your pet for sure.
One neighbor, who has 2-4 rottweilers and a decade history here basically says, "don't be disillusioned, if they want to get in, they will," but I look at this person's home and NO history of break ins and I LEARN.
If folks don't want the responsibility of a dog, please consider installing security cameras. At least some phony ones. My personal observations are that homes, with even phony cameras, haven't been touched in our area. Typically, I'm seeing security cameras mounted on homes that have high walls, more difficult to gain access and mounted high.
I am still voting for the best deterrent and that is a trained personal protection guard dog. They are affordable here. The nationals recommend higher walls with protection, security alarms, cameras and a guard dog left outside.
I had to know how my dog would respond, just knowing I had a big bouncy dog wasn't good enough, not here. Contently, I sit peacefully in my home and while out. I can check on my house while away from the smart phone, check that the gates are closed via security cameras. I've let as many people in my neighborhood know that my dog has been trained at a military/police school, even had some of the local workers help me with a little cross training from time to time so there's no question that when my dog is on, he's on duty. Ready to protect our property and most importantly, our family. These little video clips were recorded with my cell phone while we did some training a few months ago. My dog continues to make advancements as I learn how to control my obedient personal protection guard dog.
10 year old training her dog at the same school we attend...advance video to minute 4 & see how her dog protects her while she controls her dog. I'm seriously considering one of these dogs for my next future dog, they advance in training very quickly.
While some folks are content knowing they have a taser, bug or pepper spray by their bedside, I don't want someone that close to me. I may miss my target but my dog won't. Should something happen to him, there's another beautiful beast out there with him and I have no doubt she'd bite a hole in your rear if you tried to come in uninvited. lol
We were at Andares last night, lovely trained dogs on guard with their armed security team. It's time some of the gated communities, known to have problems, looked into having a couple of trained dogs on duty.

Re: Burglaries in Las Salvias and Rancho Del Oro
Kip, training is step by step...this was back in July, i think. He goes for the hand now. I'd asked the same thing although i'm not sure it makes a difference. He won't let go without the command. He could hold an intruder until the police arrived.
I also want to mention that we had a yappy dog in our house when we had a break in in the village. She was locked out on the patio and the bad guys closed the drapes. Had we been home, probably wouldn't have had a break in but we were gone and it was dark.
Regarding an untrained guard dog, they definatley can work as a good deterrent. When we moved to the property we built on, someone gave me a handmedown boxer. He was robust and boxy, a boxer bread. He had no bottom teeth and i doubt he would have bitten anyone but he scared me at first and i couldn't control him. He was a good dog that definately made a good guard dog even though untrained. I didn't feel like i had to protect him. Unfortunately, he was ill and i loved him so much that we bought my current dog as a pup before our first one had to be put to sleep. Those that don't care about training, fine. I've had those kind too but having them trained is so much better. They have manners and you know how they'll respond if there's ever a problem. I'd rather see someone who is willing to own a work dog, have an untrained dog vs no dog.

I've never heard of such a thing but have seen videos of K-9's dropping a guy to the ground begging for mercy. I think the pain of the bite is enough to render an armed man useless. Hitting and yelling just make the bite more intense. They use a whip, which cracks like a gun and sticks to act as clubs and nothing deters them except when mama says that's enough :)

It's ONLY your opinion that guard dogs are necessary in most developments which shows you know NOTHING about most developments and what goes on in Ajijic. Please tell us which developments guard edogs are needed in. You are just FEAR MONGERING. You need to educate yourself about the safety in the developments in Ajijic. Let's look at what developments DON'T need and DON'T have guard dogs.

Both Las Salvias (the area above Roberto's) and La Floresta have been hit lately.
I wonder how guard dogs would react to 20' range wasp spray? Just sayin'.

I'm not CB but I saw some sports guns in Sears in the athletic department...I thought about it too. At least it'd be a good welt...maybe.
regarding wasp spray, want me to ask my neighbor with the 2-4 rotties what he thinks about wasp spray? How long is that suppose to work? They still have noses, legs and teeth! Have fun tearing your pants climbing over our wall and once you get in, how are you getting out? It'd be a challenge. Easier to go to someone else's house that doesn't have so many deterrents.
