newbie to this forum
Hello to the list, from far away and cold Alaska
I have been a lurker here for sometime, just decided to join.
My wife and I will be there Dec 11, 2012 until Jan 15, 2013
It will be our fourth visit, so we are somewhat familiar with the surroundings
Would anyone know of a local person that would pick up at the airport and transport us to Chapala?
We have been recommended to use the taxi's at the airport, but would feel more comfortable with a driver from Chapala
Thank you
Jerry

Buy a ticket at the airport taxi booth and take a taxi, it is the best way to go.

Got to agree. Taxis is your best bet. They are always there even if your plane is delayed or you are held up in customs.

You can contact Francisco and his sons who operate a local Lakeside taxi service to pick you up. Email miramontes-transfer@hotmail.com They are very reliable and they speak English and have vehicles of various sizes depending on how much space you will need.

I am also a newbie to this site, have been to the Lakeside twice. Our second visit we got a taxi at the airport and were delivered safe, sound and very early to our destination. However, we also have driven with the above mentioned Francisco and have met his family and they were also very friendly and professional. But the taxi was unbelievably easy to manage, so if you're up for a new experience, use the taxi!

We use no one but Francisco's sons to drive us to the airport and pick us up. They speak English, carry on an interesting conversation and will tell you anything you want to know about the area. We use them because we value our lives as they drive sanely, UNLIKE the taxi drivers who race back and forth to the airport. Francisco's cars, vans and SUV's are well maintained.
Their phone numbers are (use correct prefix from AK):
Local - 766 1142
Cell phone: 045 333 157 8060
Luis Cell ph: 045 331 307 8289
Call Luis Cell phone or email him at: miramontes-transfer@hotmail.com

When you get an airport taxi they turn in a piece of paper before
they leave the airport so they can track the taxi and you. It is
very safe.

Although taxi drivers at the airport can be affordable and easy to get a ticket, a couple things need to be pointed out.
Not all of them are familiar with Lakeside and once you get down to the area, they don't always know where they are going. If you do, and can direct them, you are fine.
The other thing is that they are paid by the trip and so it is in their best interest to drive fast and return to the airport for their next fare. Fast does not always mean safe.
Having Luis's smiling face waiting for me, and or wife, ensures that I am in good hands and I wouldn't go without him.
Highly recommend Luis and his contact numbers are above.

We fly in/out of GDL a lot; always take a cab, never a problem.
Note: when we were newbie visitors, our B&B gave us written directions in Spanish (and English, so we could follow along) and a map.
If the OP doesn't know the exact location in Chapala, ask your host/landlord/prop. mgr. for directions you can give to the taxi driver.

when arriving in daylight we use a taxi, but if it is dark I prefer to have Francisco or one of his sons pick me up. They check the flight to make sure it is on time.akjerry wrote:Thanks for the suggestions, and contact info.

Are you spending the month in a b&b or have you rented a place for the month? Hopefully you will be able to come to one of our lunch swarms so you can meet some of us.

We will be staying at QQ for the duration at this point in time.
There is a lady whom I work with that has family and friends in guadalajara, and she is supposed to be there at the same time, she also has a house in manzanillo.
I check the site regularly, so hopefully won't miss the notice of the swarm
thanks

Re: newbie to this forum
I travel to the states more than a couple of times a year. I don't understand people picking up friends at the airport. If it's their first time lakeside, absolutely! But picking up someone who lives here permanently, why? I don't want to trouble a friend to get me. Think about it. They are spending their money in gas to pick you up from (usually) a vacation. A taxi is at the most 400 pesos w/tip. I always get a cab when I come back to lakeside. It's so easy to get a cab, the airport porters that greet you when you finish with customs gather your luggage and take you to the taxi booth. I make sure that the driver knows my address before I leave the airport. Since I'm usually coming in after dark, I don't want my husband or friend to risk driving at dark to get me. It's not that expensive and it's their job, they are used to driving it. As for getting a driver to retrieve me, I'll pass, they might not show up, I might be delayed by flights or customs, and that is added stress I don't need when flying.

I believe it’s a sort of a trade-off system, I’ll do it for you and you’ll do it for me even though we normally use a Taxi when returning. Save a little cash, get a little conversation in and to some of us, we think 400 pesos plus tip for a 40 minute ride a little costly. (Approximate $.80 per minute, in Mexico.) However when the need arises we use "Francisco's & sons, they are very personable.
